is this SCHIIT Bifrost 4490 board together with the 109?

I think I may have misunderstood your original question. What I was trying to say is that I have a Schiit Bifrost 4490 DAC which feeds into my Lake People G109S headphone amp. To be clear the 4490 board is in the SCHIIT BIFROST DAC, not in the G109 headphone amp. Sorry for the confusing response I gave.

now I understand, thanks for the explanation

Dragonfly Red?

The DFR is ok with my HD 6XX and can provide sufficient volume for me, although I don't have a more typical, similarly priced mobile amplifier on hand. While I think the DFR is impressive sound for its form factor, I doubt it's your best choice for price point for the HD6XX unless you really want that USB stick form factor. I would be surprised if larger DAC/amps such as Fiio offerings wouldn't outperform the DFR.

I am listening to my HD 650s from my Bottlehead Crack. Strangely, I love this combination at lower volumes.

I was in Toronto yesterday to see Joe Satriani at Massey Hall but before the concert I headed to Bay Bloor Radio to have a listen to the HD660S and also compare them to the HD650. I still think that the HD660S leans more closely to my HD6XX in that it is slightly brighter than the HD650. Bass seems a bit tighter on the HD660S. Overall though a very slight modification to the HD650 signature.

While I was there I decided to have a good audition of the HD800S (only the second time I ever heard the 800), boy that headphone sounds terrific! I switched back to the HD650/HD660S and was totally spoiled by the 800! Too bad it's so darn expensive otherwise I'd have to snag of these.

prefer which one? the smooth sound of the 650 or the bright sound of the 660s?

Probably talked about a million times here..Do Balanced cables make that big of a impact with these cans or does it take a trained ear to really tell the differences? And if so, which amp would you recommend to go with?
It depends on the amp in question but from my limited use of balanced DAC/amps there was no difference between the balanced and SE with most of the DACs and amps with the exception of the Jot which did sound a bit better on the balanced output but even then its not something that was easy to notice. As good as the balanced output of the Jot sounded with my HD650 I'd still say that the SE output of the BH Crack still sounds better to me but amps like a Liquid Glass, Dark Star and MHA-100 do sound better IMO on both the balanced and SE output than my BH Crack but it could also be considered a preference versus "better"

So I'd say it takes a "very well trained ear" to notice differences but since we all hear differently the difference between balanced and SE may not be subtle to some others.

Someone must have already pointed this out, but I'm looking to buy the HD650/6xx and I find it quite ironic that many people are selling the Massdrop version for more than $200, close to the same price as a used HD650. It's more like Masshike at this point, though I find that prices on head fi are much more reasonable than elsewhere online.

You can get a brand new HDXX for that price, but it's a wait, and might be worth buying used if it's in "Excellent" condition. Already burned in and everything.
