When you think about it there's not really another headphone that has a mid range like the HD650.

Most headphones have a dip on that area as it's notoriously difficult to get that region right bit the 650 pulls it off beautifully.

I had a pair of pre fazor LCD-2s that also had a magical mid range but they also had a dip in the upper mids causing female vocals to sound more distant. The 650 just gives you so much emotion with it's full mids and gives you that bite to female vocals that most phones miss out on.

Is there a kit available somewhere?
Also, there's no volume control. So is this sort of like a power amplifier but for headphones?

Not these one it's not available (My DIY)their are alot of kits online.I ran out of space for the volume pot but it's ok because i used a Passive preamp for all my amps all my amps are all connected to the Passive preamp so all the amps volume controls are all useless to me.Some DIY'rs like to changed their volume pot with a better components so for me instead of changing each POT why not just make up one so no need to replaced each pots in the amps i usually turned the volume pot all the way and used the preamp pot to control the volume. The preamp have a 24 stepped attenuator.

Maybe going for a Gungnir Multibit and possibly a better amp but with Sonarworks and HD650, there really isn't anything lacking.

Is there anything out their that would make this sound substantially better than what I'm currently using?

Amp wise :

Rupert Neve Designs RNHP : http://theaudiophileman.com/neve-2/

Head-fi amps for sale/ forum : https://www.head-fi.org/f/threads/rupert-neve-rnhp-like-new.840263/

I've had mine since February & it's an outstanding sounding amp especially for the price. It's become my dedicated amp whenever I use my HD650 & HD600. Superb synergy.

Some people are deterred by the supplied Power adapter but on the RNHP site they quote :
24VDC @ 0.25Amp (6 watt) minimum. Use with supplied power adapter, as this has been carefully selected for best output power and noise performance. May be used with a properly configured 24V battery as well (not supplied).
The power adapter also comes with interchangeable plug-ins :

A Schiit Multibit DAC

amp wise

Elise
Vali 2
Valhalla 2
Crack

are all better than the Ember 2 IMO

If you want to go end game grab a Zana Deux and call it quite for life.

I've heard the Vali 2 and it didn't impress me. The others are too expensive/impractical. I've bought cars for less than the cost of the ZD so that's not going to happen. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I do hear good things about this amp but I need an amp with a pass-through capability so I'm afraid that rules out the Neve.
