Nope, it'll sound quite pleasant. Its the 1/4" to 1/8" converter  that I would be worried about.
And playing from a phone implies the user wants to use it on the go. The open nature of the headphones will make it less enjoyable and the volume level will be sacrificed too when you're outside.

I'd recommend investing in a pair of decent IEM for phone on the go usage.

I know this probably a bit of a ridiculous question, but please humor me:

Are the HD650's really going to sound that bad out of just an iPhone 6S (no external Dac/amp)?

Terrible? Well, you definitely won't hear the best of them. After you get used to hearing the 650 on a good amp, it would be difficult to switch to a phone to drive them. I have an HTC m8 which is pretty decent but my 650 sounds pretty lifeless from it. Not very enjoyable.

My x5 (original) has some pretty good pop and will do in a pinch but really needs an amp to go with it.

Would you say that an amp becomes even more important when it comes to listening at low-to-moderate volumes?

Hey, I've just bought a HD650 as an upgrade (my old headphones: Sony V6, Sennheiser HD202 and Grado SR80e). I'm using O2/ODAC for driving these, and I intended to upgrade to Bottlehead Crack (w/o Speedball)/ODAC. But I really don't know how the sound will change. Is it worth?
