Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

For the longest time they were the highest model number and most expensive from Sennheiser. The 580/600/650 numbering scheme and price influences perception on quality.

I am listening to the 650 right now after owning the 580 for years and I am shocked how similar they sound. Very subtle improvements and a veil.

You might have missed the post about how it scales well.

That's very true. The ultimate audiophile systems in Asia have a set of those beautiful horn speakers
they build over there with SET amps. Can't hardly sell horns in the US. They about run Sam Tellig off
when he posted that super rave review of the Klipsch LaScala's back a few years ago. And he was right,
new LaScalas are world class sound.

As to Cowboy Junkies,
I have the original Trinity CD bought back in the day when it was first released. Amazing sounding recording
both in tone and imaging. I use it as a equipment reference and demo disc but that's about it for me. I have no
interest in the music, boring IMHO, so no interest in spending more $ money for the Revisited.

I bought my 650s used, only about 2 months old? Anyway the original owner changed the headband pad for the one off a HD 600, said he finds it more comfortable? Can't speak to that as I've never had the chance to compare.

With a Dragonfly?

With anything. It is the same family of headphones and have a lot more in common then different. The 650 isn't special in sounding more resolving with higher quality gear.

That and <clicked your profile, read your last 10 posts and threads> make me a little credulous.

Or let me say that more clearly: I disagree.

Dude you have been here since 2013. I have since 2004. I have probably heard a lot more gear then you have.

People even preferring the sound of the 580/600 over the 650 is something that has been argued with death for over a decade now. The 650s do not have a mystical ability to sound better with higher end gear that no other headphone has, especially not one in the same family.

I don't mean to sound hostile, but what higher quality gear have you heard the 650 with? The scaling with gear has been widely reported ("reproducible", to use the scientific term) by many.

Cheers

Okay Dragonfly. I'll wait 9 years until I have your tenure lol.

I have heard them on McIntosh gear among others. Higher end DACs used for stand alone hifi CD players. I never said the 650 doesn't get better with higher end gear. Just that the 650 is not limited in this.

You need to be careful with your choice of words. "Mystical" has not been an attribute cited here, and neither has the supposition that scaling is unique to the 650 -- it's not.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, and misunderstandings can occur when enthusiasms seem to runneth over.

You should probably do that. It makes no sense to say only the 650 sounds better with higher end gear and no other headphone does, no matter how much time you want to spend digging through my post history it just isn't logical.

I can testify to this. The scale on the 650 is substantial. I have recently upgraded both dac and amp for "other" more expensive headphones, but I have to admit that I heard bigger changes with the 650. I have owned the 600 briefly a year ago but never the 580.

And it still sounded veiled? Maybe with "Death Gripes" or whatever your favourite band was. Have you still got that McIntosh? You traded it for a Dragonfly??

Your post history is telling. And can you link where I said that?

I have been hearing audio gear for 55 years. What do you want to know?
