Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I would answer the iPhone -> 650's question with another question:

If you use your microwave to cook dinner every night, will it taste good?

Pretty much the same answer... if you're someone who appreciates the taste of food prepared properly, you probably won't want to use the microwave for 99% of your meals. If you just want your food to be heated up, the microwave will do just fine. Will it be cooked (subjectively speaking) properly? Probably not... but the microwave works fine to heat certain things up quickly, when you can't be bothered to use an oven or stove top.

Mixing 650 (a non-mobile semi-open HP for the most part) with an iPhone per se (a mobile source) doesn't make sense to me. Unless the OP wants to feed his iPhone to a portable pocket amp, like X12 or something.

That's why Sennheiser brought out the Momentum line of phones. I own both the HD 650 and original Momentum Over the Ear.  The 650 is one of the worlds best sounding phones but loses it's dynamics and won't play very loud straight out of portable devices unless you add an amp.  The Momentum shines in this use and is what I reach for in portable use.
BTW, new original Momentums are available on ebay for under $200, a real steal on a great can.

You'll hear your music alright but it's very far from an ideal pairing. As a stop-gap before getting a separate amp it'll work OK though. Look at the Fiio E12 if portability is essential, otherwise look for a good OTL tube amp.

That's what I am waiting for. A portable OTL tube amp, sized as an E12 would be a game changer

You can get on-ear Momentums for under $60 from amazon warehouse, used-like-new.

How about kinetic motion like a self winding watch?  Don't get much static here in Hawaii

Does anyone know how the soundstage of the HD650 compares with the AD2000x or HE400i? These are the three headphones I'm considering but soundstage is important to me. Source will be an O2+ODAC combo.

Thanks.

That's 'cause you're all driving around in those 308 GTS's lol. Or the flowery shirts are natural electron-dissipators. Or something. Maybe it's the 'staches. Okay, I'm grasping here lol

The same with my Sony MDR-1R. Sounds great outta iPod/iPhone. Smooth, non-fatiguing.

Never heard the on-ears personally but they got pretty beat up in the reviews as a rule, That's why they're going for so cheap.

I ordered some 650 drivers and put them in my 580s. I dunno what I was expecting but I am a bit disappointed. The 580 and 650 have almost the same sound signature. Far more in common then different.

Before someone says "BUT THE GRILLES LIKE MAKE THEM SOUND SO MUCH DIFFERENT" I listened to them with the grilles off even.

My Lyr 2, HE-500, and Q701 should all be here tomorrow. Can't wait to play around with it all. I hope I can notice some improvement in the HD650 on the Lyr 2. This will also be my first time using my D1 solely as a DAC.
