Here's an interesting twist I'd like to share while I wait anxiously for the Asgard 2 to arrive. I have just heard the match for the best amp I've heard in terms of dynamics and power. I been listening all morning and early afternoon with different sources and there to question...this amp is brilliant!! Brutishly powerful and elegantly dynamic.

One thing though, I can't get to twelve on the volume pot. Not even 11:00. Ten is as loud as my ears are comfortable with. Yes, that a full click and change less than where I'm at with most desktop amps.

How much did it cost you ask? More than $500? More than $1k? Nope. All for the low low cost of...wait for it...zero!! What I have have is a vintage receiver that is to my estimation at least 20 years old. Possibly 22. And it makes one of the most beautiful pairings with the hd650 that I've had the pleasure to hear. Effortlessly. I honestly don't have the adjectives to describe my amazement of the sound being reproduce by this amp that better than two decades old. I almost gave it away several times. The last friend that I offered it to wouldn't take it because it had no optical connections. I just wish that I had some seriously hard to drive hp's to see what kind of legs it's really got. It laughs at the hd650.

Which amp Matt?

Glad it worked out for you Matt! You must have a better headphone output stage in your receiver than I do. My headphones sound better out of my E17 than out of the headphone jack on my Sony Receiver. However they stepped down the output seemed to take all the "balls" with it. Bass is very sloppy on mine.

It's just like this:

High bid is $38. Somebody needs to grab this quick. 38 minutes left on the auction. It is stupid, ridiculous good with the hd650 and Orthos!!

Are you kidding? I might be bidding also. This amp sounds as good as my $900 amp/dac. It's old, granted. But good grief, you'd have to be near $1k to get this kinda sound.

I haven't even used a real dac yet to come up with these impressions. I've had my ipod connected. Can't even imagine what it'd sound like with an odac or better.

Please realize that I'm a little giddy having found this true gem in my attic. So take this in the nature that it's meant. This is only my opinion after an afternoon of listening very informally but I'm hearing about $700-$800 worth of quality coming from this amp. It may die on me tomorrow. If it did, I'd cry like a little girl.

I now realize that I must buy the one on ebay. Please don't bid on it.

Seriously stop bidding and driving the price up. I'm begging.

Just an update on the AVR-600. It's not really as good as I described. In fact it's pretty bad. I have been drinking margaritas all day and my usually keen sense of audio quality is very skewed ATM. You really don't want to bid on that amp. Seriously it's terrible.

Seriously, the only flaw I've found so far is that there is almost a little too much juice. I'm usually comfortable listening to most desktop amps around 9:00. I can barely get to 8:00 on the denon. I would love to try it with some tough to drive orthos!!

Email justin@headamp.com and ask if he has any returns on what you're looking for.

It's worth a shot.  Even among the Denon line the headphone stage output could be very different.

The ebay amp went for $43 plus $22 to ship. I lost by a dollar due to being on my stinking laptop and not clicking fast enough.
