Jason36, how similar is the 4.Ai sound sig to the HD650?

Hi Loquah,

I dont think you can really compare the 4.Ai to the HD650, they are completely different animals and products.

However the 4.Ai is analytical and detailed, excellent soundstage and instrument seperation with amazing vocals. These are my go to IEM's and are perfect when I am out and about or at home. I also use them in the office if I want a good seal with no sound leakage.

The HD650 I dont find is as analytical or detailed, but has amazing mids and also very good with female vocals and accoustic type music. That isnt to say they fail with other types of music, because they dont.....I find that the HD650 are a good do it all headphone, whether it is powered from my ALO Portable amp or my uDAC2 (I am awaiting delivery of the Schiit Modi / Magni combination for the office). I would say that the soundstage is good with decent instrument seperation, but on some types of music I do hear the "Veil" that people talk about compared to my 4.Ai (Again I am awaiting a Silver Plated Copper Cable, which I hope may aleviate some of that and open them up a bit more).

They both have their merits and benefits, but too my ears they sound completely different, whilst still being two very good products.

Hope that helps.

Any Mariah Carey and MJ lovers got any opinions on how the 650 sounds with them?

I'll very occasionally cue up some MJ with the 650's...I am a child of the 80's after all. I think that he sounds great on the 650's. His vocals really come through and are reproduced nicely.

MJ's "Invincible" album sounds really good on the HD-650. Really really tight bass, and very clean and crisp production quality.

The best track on the album that highlights the HD-650's strengths, IMO, is "Break of Dawn". Absolutely amazing vocals and instrumentals that shine on the 650.

Another album to check out is Madonna's "Music". OMG. "Music", "Amazing", "What It Feels Like for a Girl", and "Gone" are all really good tracks for the 650. My personal favorite is "What It Feels Like for a Girl", though; gorgeous, gorgeous mids on the track, which, as most people agree, the 650 handles best.

Everything MJ is clean and crisp production, really. I mean, it's the King of Pop. "Bad" Remastered Edition sounds very good on the HD650 too. You'll really understand what it means to be a smooth criminal.

HD650 will even make William Huang sounds as good as Lionel Ritchie!
