Congrats on getting the HD650, post back after you've had some time with them and I'd be interested in your impressions compared to the HD400S since I though it was similar to the HD650 when I heard them 2 years ago.

Thank you. Well while I love the smooth, warm and bright sound signature of the HE 400S the only thing that let me down was it's inability to output accurate sub bass, if the HD 650 fare better in this area while much of everything else is similar I might not be so eager to sell them ☺
The HD650 doesn't really have sub-bass, its more a mid bass hump but with some genres its all you need.Thank you. HD650 with Jot will give you excellent bass. Sub bass isn't as good as the best planars but it's close. The mid bass bump just makes it seem like it's less.
I think the smooth, warm, and bright signature is a weird combination. Could you elaborate?
I was thinking the same thing, seems like a contradiction. If he's looking for sub base, I think he'll be disappointed with the 650, especially with the amp he's got.I think the smooth, warm, and bright signature is a weird combination. Could you elaborate?

The Jotunheim must add a lot of bass then. I've used the HD650 with a lot of great sources and the subbass has always been lacking......
Agree. The 650 has very good bass in general, but after listening to phones with real deep bass for a while, then switching back to the 650, the lack of deep bass is very apparent. The Jotunheim must add a lot of bass then. A good EQ will get you what ever you want with the 650's in the bass department ...
While EQ can help the HD650 produce some good bass it will never get to something like a Fostex TH series or HE400 due to physical limitations of the HD650 driver IMO. I've yet to do the dynamat mod so can't say if this will get the bass to the level of the TH series/HE400.A good EQ will get you what ever you want with the 650's in the bass department ...

while I'm all about EQ, the low frequency roll off on a headphone with an already fair amount of distortions in that area, isn't the ideal thing to start with. I do boost the subs by a few dBs and enjoy the result(to the point that I wonder if I'm not subjectively a fan of those distortions). but there is no denying that if I was looking for clean low end with endless subs, I would get some planar stuff instead.

Most recorded modern music does not contain sub bass frequencies, which IMO is why the 650 is able to get away with it's one real flaw...lack of sub bass 60-20 hz. Unless you listen to a lot of organ music and some EDM then you really don't miss much with the 650.

I just mean they are at the perfect level between warm and bright

House music and all its variants are one of my favourite genres which contains mostly sub bass. Deep house which I love contains a good amount of sub bass, the 400i are amazing for this due to its accuracy

got a youtube link to some songs that you feel have the sub-bass you speak of? Not a genre I normally listen to so I would like to hear some examples of the genre.House music and all its variants are one of my favourite genres which contains mostly sub bass.
