Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I was looking at the HD598, but you are the first person I have seen mention that HD650 is better for gaming than either one.

Yeah people seem hung up on soundstage for gaming, to me its more about detailed positioning in that soundstage, which the HD650 does much better than those other two. Sure it might sound a bit closed in (compared to the others) but you can pinpoint a sound in the exact direction it's coming from with ease. I have thousands of hours in competitive military sims and the HD650s give me a competitive edge IMO.

Over 2000 hours in Arma 3, a bit less in Arma 2 and a few hundred in Squad. Other standard FPS I play quite often are escape from tarkov alpha, rs2:Vietnam, battlefield 4 & 1, R6 siege, etc.

Those are all games. None of them are simulators. Its funny anyone trying to call any first person shooter game a simulator. For my credentials. 87,6000 hours us army. 1996-2006 Served with 1/75 ranger from 1996-1997 then 1/505th PIr from 1997-1998. 1/313MI lrsd 98-99 then went to sfas and then to q course. Was assigned to 2/7th sfg in late 2000 after I finished the Q and spent remainder of my time with 7th group till 2005 when I spent my last year with 490th civil affairs.

I play my share of fps, but by no means are they anywhere close to a sim.

There is a genre of game called Military Simulator, which are more realistic than a standard FPS in that they simulate sound, wind, bullet drop, limb damage, blood loss, etc more realistically. They are allot more difficult and situational awareness (hearing and sight) is extremely important. That's the only reason I reference them. Your military service, which I appreciate, is irrelevant to the conversation of headphones for gaming.

For gaming the HD700 was the best IMO, great positional audio with a expansive sound stage. Also great for movies and depending on your preferences and choice of music genre the HD700 has bass that goes lower and better detailed than the HD650, HD598 and K7XX and with their wide sound stage classical, jazz and blues is really nice IMO. The only downside is the HD700 can be harsh/sibilant with poorly chosen amp, its why most suggest a tube amp to pair with them.

about gaming and directions, the cues for direction are part frequency response, part delays(+ pattern recognition stuff). and in both cases the brain maps everything based on our own head for reference in everyday life. so for example with ITD(delay between left and right ear), the game will have a simulation modeled on some human head standard in the best case scenario. if you have a smaller or bigger head than the selected standard, the delays will give a slightly different direction. it won't put something left to the back right, but it can very much be wrong by several degrees. and the headphone, aside from trying not to add too much distortions, cannot do anything about interaural delays. we just have to learn the new cues while we learn to play the game.
and same for the signature depending on the direction. the expected masking and reflections are created by the specific shape of your/my head and ears. but with a headphone that won't happen as we bypass the head and get a fixed sound source placed on the ears.

so most likely, everything is a somewhat wrong and we just have to get used to it anyway.
personally I'd get rid of the low end sounds which are hard to locate as soon as the period is longer than the distance between our ears. and explosions mask so much of the other sounds that getting rid of them might be seen as a cheat. then make sure the mids and lower area of the trebles are there and feel kind of balanced on the headphone. for the rest I'd just wait for my brain to get used to playing that game with that headphone.

Alright guys I kind of ghosted for a bit after posting, just been super busy.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that posted responses and suggestions for me.

I received my HD650s in the mail, and decided to order a Vali 2 and a Modi 2 Multibit. Can't wait to set it all up. Cheers!
AFter you get aquanted to the vali 2 for a while and decide to try some tubes head over to the tube rolling thread and maybe to the vali 2 tube pass thread and try some vintage tubes for a week.

Really? How did you serve with 1/75 from '96 - '97 (i.e. less than one year)? Just curious... I was 2/75 '84 - '87.

Pro gamers use IEM's, not headphones like the HD 650 or the HD 598. They cover their IEM's with a set of isolating closed headphones for extra isolation also and some extra sponsership exposure.

So I wouldn't take these headphones as the reference for gaming as Pro's don't use them.

I'm assuming they wear those earsets because the tournament floor is very loud. Do IEMs offer better imaging and positioning?

Against headphones like the HD 650, I would say so. They are more detailed, faster and clearer while offering isolation at the same time. So you would be hearing things more easier where it is coming from.

But those IEM's that sound like open headphones cost $1000+ which I doubt those Pro gamers use.
