Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I also got in on the HD6XX but its not as a backup, its to test out the mods that can't be reversed like the removal of the spider and foam, but also to test out the dynamat and coin mods.

That sounds interesting, where can I find info on those mods? I might consider doing them to the HD6XX...

I like the 650 as my go-to headphone, even though I have the HD800S. I find the snugger fit quite nice. HD800S is still end-game for a lot of reasons (clarity, soundstage etc) and I have the THX00 PH for dat bass. Very good compliments for each other.

Same here. I dont use hd800s much. I lean to use 650 on 800's amp at home and shure kse1500 on the go.
650 is less clearity and speed than that of 800s, but 800s is loser vs kse elec. IEM. And mid of 800s is what I dont like much bcs of its damping to high. I feel a bit resonant in 650 sound, a thing 800s may need( mid of 800s get better to my ears when I cover its back by palms at a 1 cm of distanc. More realistic)

The HD 650 are very easy to sound descent, it is not very picky with gear. I don't think I have heard a system where the HD 650 sounded really terrible on.

But that is what makes the HD 650 so good, you really got to try very hard to make it sound bad.

Do you think the 6xx will sound good with a lg v20/g6? Im tossing up between the 6xx as its currently available on massdrop and a pair of fidelio x2 as i can get them for a good discounted price on ebay.

I dont currently have a dedicated desktop dac/amp and mainly play music through my phone, but may be swayed to ipgrade if the sound is really that good

If you want to get what the HD650/HD6XX is known for then you will really want an OTL amp like a BH Crack, but they will sound decent out of most gear, can't say about the LGv20/g6 since I've never used either. The X2 is pretty good for the price but its one that I didn't keep since it wasn't that much better than the X1 that I had at the time, and since its not as demanding it might sound good with the LGv20/g6.

But it comes down to what is your sound signature preference, to some the HD650 is an end-game sound while to others its too warm and isn't detailed enough, this is something only you can decide.

I've decided to pair HD6xx with asus STX II capable of driving headphones up to 600ohms and adjusting sound signature to one's liking by changing opamps, as I'm thinking it's one of the best price/performance solution. Anyone share experience with this soundcard?

I had the original STX card, pretty good with the HD650 but I mostly used my HD700 with the STX for gaming

@Letmebefrank , if I can figure out how to search this thread most of the mods were mentioned some time ago within this thread.
There is a "Search this thread only" option in the menu that appears once you click the search box

I still have my original STX card, I used it when I first got my HD650 (2010), it had no problem driving them.
I moved on to separate DACs and amps ( as you do ...).

I'm not game to try the STX for the headphones now in case it's too close to the 10x dearer set-up,
(although I am currently using its Coax output to my DAC(s).)

Great value for PC users, DAC, headphone amp and ADC if you want to record.

Sharing screenshot of what I see when I click the search box.
