That's true for all of the top tier of High End audio.
Got the Oct issue of Stereophile a couple days ago, back cover has ad for Naim Statement amp, only $240,000.00
Really? Come on, what possible attributes could this amp offer to justify that kind of dough?  Insane

+1 on insanity.  Trophy gear still survives.

I would love to know what system Warren Buffett has at home. Apparently, he enjoys music repro and hi-end audio (?). I would be very surprised if he spent that kind of $ on audio gear. Seems like a value-oriented fellow.

Betcha he uses a 650.

Wasn't that long ago the coin was reversed and you guys were laughing about how cheap you were getting US goods.

True enough for a couple of years that is but that was generally only if we cross border shopped in the good ole U.S. of A. Even though our prices should have dropped a bunch they did only marginally and those price drops took really long to become reality.

^ I saw a mini-doc on CBC recently, about Ian Tyson's 4 Strong Winds. His grandfather served in WW1, to make a long story short. But what a song.

edit: That YouTube video @connieflyer posted: There was restaurant called Kettle Of Fish, in downtown Vancouver; I wonder if it's the same one Tyson wrote the song in.

While I really like my HD650's I think they too can be over priced considering the largely plastic construction and fairly old technology. If you can get them on sale for $300, terrific. I'd go as high as $400. Too bad about our crappy exchange rate and rather firm pricing up here. I paid just over $500 Cdn, plus tax.

$500 bucks should be the sweet spot for these cans imo. Plus they are made in Ireland, despite their "cheap" build haha.

When they were going for 200 bucks, they didn't feel that special anymore. Funny how price can influence perception so much.

Sadly we live in an age where the mere fact that a product carries a high price-tag becomes a positive attribute in & of itself. Although most of us are very much not rich there are enough people out there who really do have money to burn.

What is the recommended way of handling HD650 to avoid paint chipping?

I put a small strip of clear packing tape along the front edge of the headband where the chips are historically most likely. I did this to maintain the condition in case I ever wanted to sell it. Selling it just doesn't seem to be an option though...too damned enjoyable for me to let go of.

+1 on these cans being too damned enjoyable to get rid of.....I am keeping them this time....I may add another can to the mix, but the HD650 is here to stay.

Looks like I will finally have my amp in my hands this week, so I am pretty stoked to hear both the HD650 and HD800 on my OTL.

price to performance, $200~$300 for HD650/600 is just a bargain IMO.

^ BANG ON in my (very subjective) opinion and my thought of the week/month.

The other day I posted in the HD600 thread just how content I am with those two headphones. Where I'm at in the HF journey, the law of diminishing returns is exposing itself more than ever before. Nah, they're not the ultimate sonically (what is?) but HD6x0 with for example BH Crack Speedball 5998/Cleartop tubes.. is way out there! Very much da sweet spOt.

Crazy, man. Maybe get a friend to ship one over from elsewhere?

Eh?

RM1600 is equal to roughly $374.

The reason why I said at least RM1,600 is because places like Jaben sells them for like RM1,900.

Yeah you can buy online but then plus shipping and taxes the amount is at least RM1,500. We have low purchasing power, and good stuff is just expensive.

You're right. $500 CAD. Pretty steep, but not outta sight.

True. That's about what I paid for my HD650 and that was about as good a price available at that time. Essentially a take it or leave it price. I love them and can't imagine ever selling them. So In reality I guess that makes them priceless.
