Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Has anyone used the iFI iDSD Micro purely as a DAC w/ the BH Crack + Speedball?

The Micro seems like quite a versatile, somewhat portable device on its own, so would be interested in how it works with the Crack/HD650

I don't see why not - I use a portable Fiio X5 line-out to my Crack. Waiting on arrival of a proper desktop unit (Teac UD-501) so I can free my portable lol.

Don't really need to get a new DAC if you have the X5 unless plugging in us that bothersome. Audioquest dragonfly is a cool DAC if you need a new one though and works pretty well on it's own without an amp.

From what I can tell the Dragonfly has nowhere near enough power to make the HD 650 do it's thing by itself.

What do you think of the DT-990s?

its a different beast. Piercing highs with a satifying bass. I am using 650s almost exclusicely. 990s ive always thought were best for online games that use voip

Is there a specific type of thin material that's proven to lessen only the 9-12k region?

Yes, the HD-650 driver.

^^^ my response on the HE-400 thread when someone asked about a way to mitigate the treble spike lol

Not exactly the answer you are seeking, but I have my iFi iDSD Micro used purely as DAC feeding into my ASGARD 2, and love it.  It sounds excellent with my HD-650s as well as my AKGs and JVCs.

Damian, please post comments on the UD-501 and Crack pairing, I have the UD-301 and love it so wondering if the UD-501 would be worth the upgrade.

Will do David - I expect it'll take a week to get here. It'll be a pure DAC for me unless I feel the need for solid state. The built-in amp is only 100mw @ 32 ohms - fine for a few of my cans I guess.

The real fun will be the native DSD :)  Will keep you posted!

What is your source? Or what are you using for a source?

Will mostly be fed from a laptop via USB, the SACD/DVD-A player in my sig via RCA, or the FIIO X5 coax out. For native DSD it'll need to be fed by USB. That's basically my little quiet zone setup (with the amps below) - apart from the main HTPC system.
