Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Just bought the HD650 and am waiting for the delivery. Any suggestions for a good but cheap cable replacement? 6'

Try this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/121396227649

It's handmade, great workmanship. Just got his cable for my LCD-2 and couldn't be happier. Quality is top notch and can't beat the price.

Check his other items for even cheaper options.

This one for 50 bucks is a steal, IMO.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I'll see how I like the stock cable and see what I'm willing to spend on a new one. Thanks for giving me some ideas.

All excellent suggestions, above

I'm using ZY Hifi cable with my HD650, with excellent results so far.  I believe it is roughly 2.5m in length, and available through Amazon.

Great. And that's where all good cables should be - impulse buy territory.

Exactly... like a Pavlovian rat, I saw the pic of the cool looking cable and I just wanted my pellet.  PayPal was happy to give it to me

EDIT: I should also add that my cat chewed on the stock cable, so there's that reason, as well.

I bought the hd650 a couple of days ago and I'm surprised people says it's dark. It's not a whole lot brighter than my he-400 which is considered bright as hell. It's very fatiguing to listen to the hd650 because of the treble. What the hell?

I like the headphones, but I wished it would cover the sibilance in songs, thats why I bought the hd650 to begin with, but it doesn't..

They're not dark, they're pretty accurate (and have been like that for many years already bar earliest production). I guess your music is bright to start with.

Actually the sound is awesome, maybe the problem is I turn up the volume unconsciously because it's so awesome when played louder, maybe that was why it was so fatiguing.

Damn I wished it would remove the sibilance in some badly mastered songs and it would be the perfect headphone!

The HE-400 is a dark headphone with a recessed upper midrange/lower treble.  HD650 is also dark but has balanced upper mids and lacks the treble peaks that plague the HE400.

Yes, try to keep it lower and your brain will adapt. I have the same issue with my oversensitive ears.

The only headphone better with badly mastered songs is LCD-2, but it's much more expensive and less comfortable for some.

This will settle with burn-in, believe me. The HD650s were a bit sibilant, but clean and punchy when I first got 'em. Now - after burn-in - they are dark and muddy. They sound loud best, due to the treble roll-off. That's why they are so popular. Try them at lower levels and they are muddy and veiled.

Let us know how it is! I've considered buying that one, too. I mostly just want a different cable with a 1/8" termination instead of 1/4" as I'm using an O2 with a 1/8" jack. Right now I have a Grado adapter but a nice cable might help resell value if nothing else.

I haven't ever tried a different cable besides stock on any headphones and am extremely skeptical (but open minded) to the idea that it could change the sound... even if could, though, I think the $70 ZY cable is the most expensive thing I'd be willing to try. Funny, some reviews say "Definitely a difference, not subtle" and others say "it's a nice aesthetic upgrade but sounds the same".
