Sennheiser HD250 Linear Impressions Micro-Thread

So anyone with the wang pads and the hd400 foam have issues with the fact that the 400 foam is round and smaller than the oval shaped openings of the wang pads? there are large gaps at the top and bottom of the pad opening.

Yea that's because the wang pads are oval. I tend to stretch the bottom or top a lil bit with my finger to close the tiny gap, it's a bit stretchable.

So I ended up going back to the Hifiman pleather pads with the HD400 foam (facing the direction in the image). I also tried the HD430 pads along with the 430 foam, the Wang pads (Gold graph line) with the HD400 foam and HD430 foams. I was getting these measurements with the wang pads consistently, and couldn't get as good of a seal on my head (and the E.A.R.S) as the HFM pleather pads. With slight EQ tweaks (Blue graph line) I was able to get something pretty linear until the upper mids and not overly hot (that 9k peak is ok ish).

So I just realized that the measurements of the 250 Linear 1 w/ Wang pads measure very close to the HD250 Linear 2 (I have not heard the linear 2 so can't commend on the sound) . Just as an FYI for anyone who is interested. I have not heard the linear 2 so thought this was interesting as I had read they were quite different. Based on the descriptions from this thread along with DYI Audio Heaven seems like the pleather pads w/ 400 foam disks sound closer to what the 250Linear 1 stock sound is and the Wang pads (with either wang foam / 400 or 430 foam) sound more like what the 250 linear II is.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that the current Cardas plugs don’t fit securely in the HD250s. They tend to fall out.

No such problem with generic Chinese connectors, though...

Love Sennheiser HD250 Linear very much!

My 300ohm & 600ohm
Have tried many earpads & foams, like this original HD430 earpad & foam the most.

In most vintage HD250, the black/grey foam in #11 should have oxidized/deteriorated, it is crucial to replace it as to get a pristine sound.

Yea the HD430 foam and pads are great. I have stuck with the Wang pads w/ (430 foam or Wang foam) and my other favorite is the Hifiman pleather pads with the HD400 Foam.

I havent looked at the inner one on mine (#11) , maybe afraid to... Out of sight, out of mind?!?! The outer ones are perfect at least..

Where would you even get such a thing when Sennheiser can't even supply us the pads or outer foam?

PS as I've said before I don't know why they've abandoned their enthusiasts. Especially as this is primarily a professional head that has not been adequately replaced. Profit I suppose but they weren't always like thid. Customer loyalty founded on a belief that a manufacturer does care about their customers matters in the long run. Long rant over... For now

(Listening as I type on a newly arrived pair of Sennheiser IE80S BT (brilliant by the way) earphones as I type this, mind!!! 🤔)

For the black/grey foam in #11, certainly there is no original Sennheiser, I just use similar black foam & cut the shape by myself.

Be very careful not to touch the extremely thin wires coming out from the drivers.

Got a very good condition pair of the 250 Linear 600 Ohm. I try to write down my first impression in comparison to the Denon AH-D9200 which is so far the best closed i had. I'm not a fan of closed backs.

Treble is very intensive and on the very edge of what i can tolerate. It almost reminds of the beyer peak. So nothing for treble shy people.

Bass is very good and deep reaching. In comparison i think the 9200's bass is better, faster and reaches a bit deeper. The 250 has more "oompf". Overall i prefer the 250 for EDM.

The mids seem a bit recessed and unnatural to me. It's nothing for vocal lovers.

The soundstage is completely staggering. The 250 creates such a huge stage at least on the vertical axis that i wonder how is that even possible for a closed back. Instrument seperation especially in large classical orchestras is stunning. The 250 places music all over the place while the 9200 creates a smaller and tighter area.

When i turn OTL mode on the 250 loses it's sharp treble and gains more "meat" between the different instruments which makes music a bit more cohesive and thus slightly decreases soundstage. I'm not a tube fan but i think the 250 works generally well with tubes.

It reminds me a lot of the few times i tried the HD800.

I've never seen any headphone that benefits so much of being driven in OTL mode. Usually i prefered every headphone, even HD600, on non OTL mode but this one really gets from quite good to stellar. Eases out the treble completely.

I would have thought so. You could just use a multimeter to check...
