Sennheiser HD250 Linear Impressions Micro-Thread

I tried a triple innerfoam mod, works good. I added the foam I had at hands : 2 foams from my DT770, the 2 HD250 innerfoams already included (no idea if they are original) and 2 foams from the Amperior. Now the excessive treble energy is more normal, and remember that when you tame a region, it increases the other two regions since everything work relatively. Less treble = more midrange. The dry midrange has more body now. The bass is a little better as well.

Fun :)

Quadfoam mod otw.

the fatal flaw of this headphone is the plastic headband which limits its ability to increase clamp.

I used my hand to push the speakers closer and WOW!

then i let go and its near perfect tonality dissipates into a bit of distanced sound.

but to be fair i have hm5 hybrids ... yuck...

1st world problems :p

less problematic with sheepskin hm5 but i need to explore pad optioons. :D

I bought the 2.5mm TRRS balanced cable from china https://www.ebay.com/itm/202122565347 to work with the Fiio x5 III.

I think it is gonna be a noticeable worthy improvement. Will also use this cable with the Amperior and when I get my hand on an HD600.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that, too, I really do dig the sound as-is, stock, but it sounds even better to me pushed in closer to my ears, but I don’t do that anymore because that would just get me to spoiled on a sound I won’t hear normally. :)

Also, the plastic headband makes it look cheap, in my view. Same goes for the plastic cups. Not my prettiest headphones by a long shot, but I really dig the sound.

I now use 5 pieces of innerfoam and 3 layers of kleenex (each side). Sounds funny but it works, with those original pads at least.

And for those of you wondering, the diameter of the original pads are 100mm and the thickness is 20mm.

I was able to squeeze 1540 pads on em. Little improvement over hm5 sheepskin, but still need to go further in the hd250 journey. The dekoni sounds good but pricey. I am wondering how the china pads on ebay are. :p

I got tired of holding the cups to my head, so i went to work. lol
I thought hmmm my beyers have good clamp. So i used a Beyer metal headband and attached it to the hd250 headband by taping it on (red and blue tape) The rest is secured by the headband padded from beyer pro. It works! The metal was already bent to a clamp i liked on other beyers. Tight! It also adds more cushion to top of head. The weight is not drastically increased though adds some meat. There are compromises. But really its not much. Try and see.

its ugly yes, but now sounds right and i can bounce my head around

I guess this is something done in desperation and if you really need that close clamp. The pads are sheepskin hm5 squished over time (by jumping on them/ kettlebells)

end of rant.. i've lost a few marbles by now :p :D

My HD250 Linear 1 300 ohm review is up

Nice review. I agree with almost everything except I don't think it sounds sweet or that it has more resolution than a planar LCD2.

To my ears, the midrange is as dry, clinical, neutral and analytical as you can get. At the end, it seems there is some work to do to put this headphone in its sweet spot, either by adjusting the clamp force, foam and pads modding, or getting better synergy with the right amp.

I have found with its beautiful musical low end, and it's somewhat analytical qualities in mids/treble, it does what few closed backs do. Ofc i did modify to get this, but i was surprised once it was close to my ears, how detailed it can be, while having some magical quality similar to what sextett offers in the low end. Not necessarily the biggest baddest most detailed bass, but it is textured nicely and isn't bloated or farty. Maybe some need treble recessed, but not for a beyerhead like me. It has some qualities of old beyer/ german treble i like. But the bass is shockingly good with good seal. I have been A/B'ing these with my dt48/480 which i have in 5/25/200 ohm variants, and it is very close in detail once it gets closer to ear.It can be a bit laser like , much like old Sony's ... but better lasers. It is superior in many areas to hd580/600 and sounds very much like an open can.

I won't call it sweet as apple pie sweet, but there are hints of sweetness due to that low end magic. It is not clinical at all. The dt48 is clinical as it gets. Also had Sextett LP to compare low end. YMMV IMO

Received the 2.5mm cable. Very good quality. Fits perfectly tight. Sound improvement is what I expected, the music feels less distorted especially in the treble and the separation is better. Musicality is increased. I recommend if you use a portable that can work with this cable. Pictures next. I also show my foam mod, I prefer 6 layers of foams, 7 being too much, 5 still giving me too much problem with treble. Now, of course the treble is still very present, I always use the opening riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit as my reference point for neutrality. If the opening doesn't feel exactly like it is supposed I consider the sound to be side of neutral (whatever). Treble is a little metallic and elevated but for most songs the music is great and I am excited to hear more.

I have these HD250 Linear somewhere in my basement. Bought them in the early 80s. for around $200 Just ordered some simple cussions and foam, curious how they perform. Normally listening to HE400i.

Will measure tomorrow if they are 300 or 600 Ohms.

Maybe I am willing to let them go....
