Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

Since owning the HD700's I've had the Audeze LCD-X, HiFiMan HE-560 and Fostex TH900 in my system and none of those were a step up sonically or comfortwise.

Wow, that's painful to read lol

I can understand that sentiment, though. I recently picked up an HE-400 and was shocked how much I liked it. My ears tend to respond to planar drivers, so I guess Im not that surprised.

After all these years, I just try to trust my ears rather than a phone's reputation. Not easy to do.

I've used my HD-598 and HD-700 for playing computer games (Test Drive, Tomb Raider, Call of duty, Crysis, Metro: 2033, last light) and they were both pretty good, the HD-700 will give a wider sound stage and has better details but as @Rob80b
stated you will need a amp that will pair well and a good DAC might also be helpful.  I used Bifrost DAC and Project Ember AMP with the HD-700 using the optical connection out of my computer.

I have a Asus Xonar STX which has a dedicated headphone amp. It has more than enough power to drive the HD700/650. Some higher end Soundblasters can do the same. And yes the HD700 is very good for gaming.

Don't know if I understand you correctly. But for gaming I think the STX has enough juice. For music I would recommend a dedicated desktop amp. Tubes or not is a matter of taste for me. I have one amp that can do all my cans on low gain. That is my Meier Opera. And the Stepdance @ 15 volt for portable use.

Damn near everything except for some unity gain amps will drive the HD700 easily. Whether or not they drive them to your liking is another story...........

I also have an STX and DG, they are great soundcards and yes they both have enough power to drive the HD-700 and HD-650 to very high levels but using the BH Crack with the HD-650 and the Ember with the HD-700 drive these two headphones to closer to their potential.

Hey Guys!

Happily reading back all the posts... which is taking me ages!

One quick question, I can grab an "as good as new" HD700 for around 375 Euro...
Now, I am usually using my JH Audio Roxanne's (custom) with my AK240. I am, however, looking for an additional headset and stumbled upon the HD700.

Is there anyone that would be able to compare JH Audio's signature to that of the HD700? And, fwiw, is it able to drive the HD700 by only using the AK240?

Thanks!

Man, I had the exact opposite reaction. I was shocked by how much I disliked the sound, build quality, and fit of the HE-400.

I'm interested in trying the HD-700 now that the price has dropped so much. My only concern is the size of the HD-700, since my ears already make contact with the inside of the HD-600 and HD-650. The AT M-50x is actually an on-ear for me, lol.

I can't imagine anyone's ears touching the drivers of the HD700, so you should be fine there. And I'm with you on the HE400, I wasn't a fan at all. Sold them like a week after getting them. I thought a moderately expensive planar would be good, but my T50RPs dominated the HE400 in every way.

If you think that all an amp does is amplify the signal so that you can hear louder than you're mighty wrong.

It iz supposed to amplify all of the signal with all frequencies in it and not give our any noise.

That's not something the STX can do well like a better amplifier.

I said for gaming, the STX is ok. When gaming I am not too critical about the sound.

Unless you have elf ears, you should be fine. HD700 has pretty deep earcups that has a lot of room for most people's ears.

There are several reasons why so many people (even haters of HD700) say that it's the most comfortable headphone they've ever worn. Having a deep earcup is one of those reasons.
