Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

I guess I am lucky, but my two favourite headphones (HD660S2's and Social Clear's ) work well with my amps (Violectric V220, iFi Pro iCAN and Valhalla 2).
Yeah, I don’t like them on my Lake People G111 MKII at all, the HD 650, R70X, HD 660S, and T1.3 on the other hand are fantastic on the amp. So far liking the S2 on the Magni Heretic and Liquid Spark more than the G111. Though it's possible a different dac, interconnects, or experimenting some more with the gain settings may bring the S2 to my liking on the G111.

The HD660S2 seems to have just the right amount of bass. I really enjoy the lively, even midrange/treble response. Nothing seems like it's missing. I enjoy the Meze 109 Pro's bass on some songs, but the mids are a tad too recessed. I see myself reaching most for Sennheiser HD660S2 or Shure SRH1540 most depending on the DAP I am using.

I have been through A LOT of stupid money headphones and setups. The 660s2 is extremely well balanced and enjoyable. The fact that these can be obtained for $300ish used like new is a gut punch when I stare at my 1266.

Me too. I really like the HD660S2's. Every frequency has a chair at the sound banquet. Many super expensive offerings always seem to be missing something.

That is true, it’s surprising how many headphones are lacking something. To me the most notable thing is the S2’s bass and subbass, I find it not talked about much how much sub-bass energy it has for an open-back and I find its bass presentation quite unique. Mid presentation reminds me more of a laid-back version of the HD 600 mids, it doesn’t have the HD 650 full rounded character but rather the more pristine and precise character of the HD 600. The HD 660S mids on the other hand has a drier more diffuse character to them. Treble also stands out as better quality than any of the other HD 6xx line.

It's really good on my Lotoo Paw Gold Touch.

The Sennheiser HD660S2 headphones sound like garbage out of my Sony.
660S2 doesn't sound like garbage out of my Sony ZX707 JP but it doesn't sound as good as it should.

The 660S2 is much better paired with my Cayin RU7 dongle for some reason.

Same with my r2r hiby FC6 dongle... Warm sources I guess?
Sony 707 isn't exactly a warm source but it is a bit warmer than RU7.

Don't know what it is. Most of my IEMs and headphones sound a good amount better with the 707 but not the 660S2.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that the actual impedance of the S2 is closer to 350 ohms. Given the stated sensitivity, the S2 doesn’t need a ton of gain, but it likes power and scales up with nicer amplification.

How do you guys handle the comfort with the s2? They hurt my head if i use them for a few hours
and yes no doubt these have endgame level sound they are hard to dislike

I left mine clamped to something slightly larger than my head when not in use, and after a few weeks of doing that the clamp was noticeably reduced. In my case i used an Amazon box. I got a large head so it was a LARGE box hahaha. They don't feel nearly as clampy as when new, which was vice-like.

I've noticed the HD 6xx line can vary some in terms of clamp. The HD 660S and HD 600 were perfectly fine out of the box. The HD 660S2 and HD 650 were vice grips and stayed so for a while. I had to end up stretching the S2 recently as it still didn't reduce as much as my other Senns.

It's still pretty snug on my head. I realized they're more comfortable when I place my ear directly in the center of the earcup. I end up using the 5th or 6th notch on the metal stem.

The 58X (and I assume all 6series models) are easy to loosen up a little without Uri Geller's help. I would guess though that doing it too much will loose you bass.
