Why? I assume that's because you already have a lot of those? 
 
Fortunately the tubes for the Crack (a) are plentiful, (b) are generally cheap, and (c) almost all sound excellent. Not to mention the fact that it comes with tubes that will probably sound 95% as good as anything else you can buy.

I wanted to try an Omega but then I thought, "for this money I'd get an Aurum Cantus Volla, matched stands, a nice amp and source, then spend a bit more to refurbish one room and make the most of the speakers."

  Hey all, considering adding a pair of he 400s to the collection to try out the planar sound.  My question is how different are they from the 600s.  Are they different enough to justify the cost? Or is it more of the same flavor in a different package?

 
They are completely different.  I actually spent several hours today listening to both of these headphones on a few different amps and sources; they are not similar.

I agree. But just because the HE-400s are different from the HD600s, doesn't mean they are worth having.  

   (Note, I don't mean to imply that yaboin was saying they are worth having -- his post doesn't express an opinion one way or the other.) If anyone is looking for a bass-heavy can to complement the HD600s, I suggest they consider the V-Moda M100s.

  I have 4 pairs actually. 1 pair micham  mullard ecc88, 1 pair sieman e88cc gold pin & 2 pairs of
  cca 1960ish siemans.  Crack & speedball..wow..very impressive on how it affected your
  preference. tempting..

Asked in another thread but thought id try here if i'm going to buy one pair of headphones and dont plan on upgrading again how much would i be missing out on by just owning the hd600s - if i heard hd650s or even the hd800 / he 500s would they completely destroy the 600s?
 
Just trying to understand whether the 600s are pretty much the ultimate best value headphones before further improvements are minute?

    If you tweak your rig up till 600s touches your soul , even hd800 or he500 could not destroy it.
    Been there & done that.

I've got an essence stx and a matrix mstage and not looking at tweaking. Just after a set of headphones that will satisfy in terms of incremental improvements in sound would be minimal vs price
 
My budget was originally < 500 for the setup... i've already bought amp/dac for around 200. So ideally i would spend around 300 and get the HD600s unless there is a good reason to stretch and get some HE500s second hand or something like that

Nothing I heard until now destroys the HD580/600 . HD800 is a real improvement for sure but it definitely does not destroy HD600.

   Never thought that hd598 sounds like hd800.
   yeah i think they r more revealing than hd600 & less bass
   it has been decades since i last used hd598 & was a newbie ...so the unit was not properly powered

I talk about HD580. not HD598 . .HD580 is the predecessor of HD600 .

   He500 is heavy & clamp your head pretty tight. but they r fun.one word..not comfy 
   hd600/650 are really  comfortable headphone & musical provided your amp/dac have sufficient power
   if i were you, i get a used hd600/650  with aftermarket cable
   Hd650-silver cable, hd600-copper cable.

This confusion comes up all the time, due to Sennheiser's stupid numbering system. The HD598s are NOT on the same level as the HD580s and HD600s. The HD598s are more mid-fi cans and not all that impressive. The HD600s are.

I think my ideal headphone would be an HD600 with angled pads that also very slightly increase the low bass. I'm sure Senn will never do that because you would have a $500 headphone that competes with the HD800. ;p
