Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

after about 8years with 600, its still the one im always with in bed.. hahahhaha…

im also curios as to why most audio shop in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur use this one of a kind headphone as demo of thier audio system… There are about 3 shops in the Adelphi building SG which showcase a very expensive audio system with HD600 being primary headphone. Another shop also who carry Schiit brand also have the 600 and 650 along with the whole variants of its amp; whilst there are also HE6, LCD3, DT990 and etc in the corner which i think not being use regularly as those are contained in a glass.

That's because the HD600 series of headphones are fully capable of showing the benefits of top-end gear. In fact, before the advent of grand headphones like the HD800, many users built high-end rigs around the HD600 and HD650.

True! 800 only edge in the level of transparency and soundstage... Though, not everyone are willing to spend such money for an average imprvmnt. IMO, 600 isnt far from 800; specially when paired with right amp, its on the same league with dif flavor...

I disagree.

I love the HD 600 but the HD 800 wipes the floor with it. In every way.

Please elaborate.

I know of at least 3 members who own both, and would agree that the 800 is better, but not by more than 15-20% (if you put numbers on it).

You cant put numbers on it.

The 800 has more detail and clarity. Soundstage and imaging is just surreal with the 800. Bass response is deeper, tighter, and faster. And the 800 is much cleaner sounding - smoother with no grain.

Again, if I had never heard the 800, I would think the 600 was fantastic, but the 800 is just in a different league.

Now I feel tempted to get my hands on a 800 to see for myself.

I'm with palmfish on this one.  the HD800 is in another league vs. the HD600.  I've had the HD600 too.. and I (still) adore those phones (as eke2k6 knows).  In fact, if I didn't have the HD800, the HD600 would probably be the last open-back, dynamic I own.

The HD800 simply has a higher ceiling in terms of technical ability.  I feel it's pretty easy to get an idea of the HD600's capabilities as far as dynamics, soundstage, resolving ability, etc. when using mid-fi upstream gear.  The HD600 scales remarkably well, too.  Heck, I'm pretty sure Craig Uthus (of Eddie Current fame) has an HD600 and regularly uses it with his fabled amps.  The HD600 scales up with better gear.. but not to the degree the HD800 is capable of.  The Senn flagship seems to scale almost endlessly.  When properly driven, there's an immersion factor with the HD800 that I just haven't heard with the HD600.  This goes beyond the (jaw dropping) soundstage.  It extends very far at the frequency extremes.. and if you thought the HD600 had an amazing midrange, you'll be gobsmacked by the HD800's mids.  As palmfish said, there's a smooth, grainless, and completely effortless quality to the sound that I simply haven't heard from any other phone.

I also just purchased the hd600.  Now I need to get an amp to power them.  Any suggestions around the $150 or below range.  I have been looking at the Schiit Magni or JDS Labs 02.  Anything else I should look at? Would I need a DAC or can I just use my Macbook Pro? Thanks

@faithguy19
Your mac book pro should have a toslink fiber optic output through the headphone jack. so it is possible to send a high quality signal to a dac. if you decide to get a dac with toslink in.

on the amp probably a valhalla, lyr or bottlehead crack.

Congrats on your purchase. For that money I would go with the Schiit Magni. For a few bucks more you could do the stack and have quite a nice little setup!

Holy crap, the 600 EQs like crazy.

I just bumped up 50hz and 70hz in foobar by 4db, then I used James Blake's Limit to Your Love to test the "stability" of the EQ...wow! Hello, sub-bass!

Zero distortion, and the bass is so much more visceral.

Thanks Kenshinhimura and Byronb I will definitely look more into the Magni then. That is the direction I have been looking into anyway so thanks for the confirmation. Audiojun I would love to get the valhalla or lyr but unfortunately right now they are out of my price range.  Thanks though.  Eke what amp do you use with your hd600's?
