the 6XX never lived up the hype IMO even when I just had DT990's unmodded and sundara they always were sitting in their case and I barely find a reason to take them out now a days between Sundara, M1570, M570 and DT1990i got a pair of brand new HD600s and they sound loads better than the 6XX/650 variants - so much so that i wonder if my 6XX was broken or out of phase
what is the difference between the white and black silk baffles some people talk about online? i can't actually find anything about the actual differences, only that people point out that they exist

Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

The HD650 and its derivatives generally sound significantly darker and smoother than the HD600. This can give the impression of a veiled, rolled-off treble. The HD650 can sound good out of the right OTL tube amp, but I also prefer the HD600 in 90% of applications.
what about the 660S I have seen variations of it's the best and it sucks meanwhile the HD600 is basically the most loved usuallyThe HD650 and its derivatives generally sound significantly darker and smoother than the HD600. So far we have seen it's a bad idea to try to improve on perfection
Funny for me it's the opposite. I always had a new pair of HD600 and found the imaging terrible. Bought the HD650 recently (first version made in Ireland) and they're superior to the HD600 in imaging and speed. HD600 is still very good.I experienced the same thing. The imaging on the HD600 is much better than the HD6XX I had. With noticeably less distortion.

It depends on a music of your choice, also on the dac/amp. For the NOS R2R-11 with a powerful natural sounding discrete amp, HD-600 seems better.Funny for me it's the opposite. idk how it's possible to say this but we all hear things differently. in my exp the 650/6xx and 58x have the worst imaging of the 6 series headphones. Speed-wise the 650/6xx was the worst to me also

I own the 600, 650 and 660S driven by the Benchmark HPA4. I tend to prefer the 650 most of the time but that changes depending on which day you ask me. The 600 is definitely the most neutral but the little bit of added warmth in the 650 makes it just about perfect for musical enjoyment. IMO the 650 still has the best mid range timbre of any of the more expensive phones I've owned. The 660S goes too far away from neutral so can sound strange at times, just slightly off base, even when not comparing with anything else.

Now I remember the words in my HD 800 box "crafted for perfection"So far we have seen it's a bad idea to try to improve on perfection

i guess between hearing things differently, silent revisions, and individual unit variation, it's hard to say whether i actually don't like the 650/6XX or i just had an especially veiled unit. mine was very noticeably dark (significantly more than the 600, even to untrained ears like those of my family and friends). i'm not sure if i should go out and try another 6XX/650 ...? i do greatly prefer the 600 currently though

Tyll said the 650 is veiled compared to the 600. Just stay with the original

I sold the 650 recently and picked up a 600 and couldn't be happier. I had to get honest with myself that every time I get a 650/6xx I eventually find it a bit boring. The lack of imaging on the 650 really stuck out to me this last time I owned it.

I listen to electronic music with 650HD and OTL amplifier. They won't bang and sub bass is rolled off, but I still find them quite an enjoying listen. Majority of my electronic music is not that bass focused though. As someone said mid's are something special, especially for such price. The rest is mediocre and lags behind if you compare to higher end stuff, very intimate sounding as an openback. The thing with these models is that they don't have very obvious faults and carry addictive tonality as a whole, the more time I spend with them the more they grow on me. HD650 went from "I want to sell them" to " I'll keep them till the drivers will fail"
If weight is not a problem and you want quality bass, safe $$ cash and look for used audeze lcd 2 classic

This is great advice, I think the 600 is just that much clearer!Tyll said the 650 is veiled compared to the 600. Just stay with the original
