Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Are the 600s so much better than the 650s that it would be worth it to sell my 650s and get 600s?

I've sold either LCD-2F and HD650 and returned to HD600. It is that good. But it depends alot on the music you're listening to - HD650 is more versatile due to more forgiving nature.

I listen to metal / prog rock / post rock and I'm on a schiit stack (Modi2U/Magni2U)

Hmm. With those genres I'd rather stay with HD650. HD600 is clearly superior with acoustic, vocal, jazz'y stuff. HD650 is a better all-rounder, but is pretty mediocre with truly audiophile-grade recordings (IMO).

Before switching headphones, try a new cable. Both the 650 and 600 love new cables.

The cable on the left channel is getting kinda loose. Sometimes when It take them off it'll just fall out. Perhaps a new cable really is in order. I have a hard time seeing myself spending a significant amount of money on a cable though. I'm not very well-versed on the difference it makes or what cables are good. Seems like most cables I stumble onto cost almost as much if not the same (or more) than a pair of headphones alone, which seems kinda absurd.

Like many folks I'm using the HD 650 cable on my 600s. One of these days I know I'll be heading toward equipment using balanced signals. Does anyone feel these $300 (retail) phones do especially better with $200-300 balanced cables?

They sure do benefit. It's not absurd because the HD600 and 650 (as was discussed here very recently) would be $1k to $2k headphones if released today in many fans' opinions. Try Toxic or Moon Audio.

Even if there is a difference, it's not night and day as some claim. Not trying to turn this into yet another cable debate, but one would fare much better off by simply changing the headphones to find the signature they like.

I like my 600s very much. Not really interested in experimenting so much as maximizing what I've got. I do believe I can improve my system when I add a second setup. For instance, if I move to the Schiit Mjolnir 2 and Gungnir Multibit I'll possibly add a new headphone at that time but not necessarily.

I don't know. :)
I bought last Christmas and I found it pretty similar to 600 so I returned it and kept 600. So if you bought not very long, it should be new version I think.

Did some quick googling. The difference is the color of the driver. The new one has a silver color inside compared to black inside the grill. I bought mine used so I'll have to take a look when I get home. Here's hoping for the best! :D
