Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread

IMO the 598SR has the same 598 and 598SE 50 Ohm drivers with the updated headband and cable with remote from HD 598 Cs. That's it. Let's see if tuning is different, maybe like HD 599 ?

There is a table with 589SE - 598SR - 598 Cs side by side here:

So maybe 598SE will not yet be discontinued, and maybe 598SR sounds like 599

The link to Sennheiser site you posted, at the very bottom, shows that the SR is 50 Ohm.

The SR is a very odd design to bring to market, IMO. It's open back, but includes a "mobile" cable with in-line remote and microphone. Relatively few people will use an open back headphone in a "mobile" setting. I'm glad they used the new headband design. Anyone know if the pads are the exact same velour from the SE?

As far as if it's the same as 599, based on the specs published by Sennheiser, I'd say no. 112 db sensitivity for the SR. 106 db for the 599.

I think the Ivory HD 598 has been discontinued. Amazon.com shows delivery of 1-2 months. B&H Photo shows "no longer available." Google Shopping search shows mostly just ebay listings.

Anyone confirm?

Looks like the SE is still available on Amazon. Maybe the SR really will be replacing both?

The ivory version was discontinued some time ago, if I'm not mistaken.

Not heard anything official. Amazon UK listing has the SE as being discontinued. Ivory version still in stock across the .EU sites.

Amazon.com just lowered the price of the new HD 598SR from $199 to $159. Still shows a 1-2 month availability though.

I just checked Sennheiser US website and the Ivory and SE are no longer available to purchase from them.

So it does appear that the SR will be replacing both Ivory and SE models.

The SR with the new, improved headband and bonus cable with volume/mic controls seems like a nice improvement, especially if the price hovers around the $150 mark.

Been looking for a sound similar to the old HD555 and I was able to grab the 598 Cs for $45. How do they sound compared to the 555 and how much of the soundstage is sacrificed on the Cs?

Never heard the 555. Was able to compare 598 to 598 Cs back to back, and the Cs does lack in detail, treble extension and airiness/openness. Soundstage is noticeably smaller, but not bad for a closed back can.

The 598 (open back) is a nice sounding, detailed headphone that even sounds great without amplification and seems to scale well with. The new improved headband ported over from the 598 Cs on the 598SR will be a welcome addition as I never really loved the glued on marshmallow look of the 598/SE even though it was/is comfy.

How is the soundstage compared to the 600 and 650?

I returned my 598Cs for a pair of apparently leftover 598SE's on amazon. Didn't want to wait for the SR's and apparently the SR has the same headband as the Cs. I actually got hot spots on my head from it. It looks a lot better but the old marshmallow SE headband is a lot more comfortable to me. Take that for what it's worth as YMMV.
