Yes, the 2.5mm plug that goes into the headphones is TRRS, however any TRS (standard 2.5mm) plug, assuming it is slim enough or specially grooved for the HD5X8, will work just fine.

Again, not my question. I am asking whether the jack (not plug, jack is the hole that the plug goes into) is actually TRRS, or are we just sticking a TRRS cable into a TRS jack.

I see see. Sorry I shouldn't post while multitasking. Ok, take a look at this pic here:

Looking at the PCB, I would say the answer to your question is yes, the jack is TRRS (edit: maybe?)

Agreed.  The Moon Audio cable in my HD598 is TRS, and it works just fine.  (And adds that magical twinge of bass the 598s so badly need.)

Question:  I read something about a soundstage mod that results in the 598s looking like baby 600s.  Does it have any benefits, or is it more hassle than it's worth?

It takes a while and it's a permanent mod but totally worth it.

What exactly does it do (other than make it look like baby 6x0s are on your head)

What is this mod?  I've never heard of it?  Does anyone have any info?  Pros and cons?

Assuming they mean this.

Yup!

That looks GORGEOUS.  And bigger soundstage.  And looks like a baby 600.  Now if I could just find someone who could do it without damaging the parts of the 598 that need to stay undamaged.... because that looks fantastic.

It's easier than it looks. It took me about an hour or so.

The problem is I'm not able to use solder due to fumes.  My asthma is that sensitive :frowning2:

It doesn't require soldering. Just open up the headphones, remove the drivers, cut out the fabric and the plastic grill from the cups, put the headphones back together.
