Saw that also. I was contemplating in getting one.

To those who already have this, is the HD598 hard to drive?

I think the hd598 the last in the "hd line" that don't require an amp.its easy to drive .
They don't require an amp but you won't get them very loud from most mobile devices. They do fill out in terms of sound when amped as well - more impact and dynamics. They have a massive impedance spike at 100hz too, so they are better well driven.

im thinking about buying a pair of HD598 to replace my HD495's. I use my headphones on my computer and they're plugged into a "creative x-fi titanium fatal1ty Professional"  that's exactly the name of my soundcard its not the HD version or anything.

is my soundcard enough to power the 598's, (cant find the technical output info) without effecting sound quality?

thanks in advance.

Amazon has it on sale for $99 ! ordered one ,can't wait to try it.

I got mine for $123 (Canadian dollars of course).
I heard these are the same as AKG Q701's without the treble boost and more warmth. If this is true I'll be enjoying the 598's for rock and Q701's for everything else.

(I have a big poprock/rock playlist)

I got lucky, was asleep, my wife saw the deal, looked at the price history on camel and just bought it without even waking me.
When I woke up, I was stoked, she had no clue what she bought haha just knew I was looking for a new pair of cans. Figured, we could always return them, but they are a keeper.

50-ohm, not too hard to drive. They work fine on my ipod, but they sing on Schiit Magni/Modi.

Oh wonderful.  I'm looking for an amp to replace my HiFiMAN EF2A, and kinda am considering the Magni.  Frankly with my willpower and budget I'm not willing to deal with tubes at the moment.  Would you say the Magni is a good upgrade?

That $99 deal from amazon was too good to pass I bought a second pair without hesitation. I still prefer my hd600s but the hd598 as a headphone that works great straight from a portable device is a headphone I will never part with if ony sennheiser came out with a hd698 at about a 400 price point

I missed it. Too bad. Even used pairs don't sell that cheap.

About amping yes you can drive the hd598 from anything but even if your smartphone gives enough power, the 598s won't reach their full potential unamped
