Are there any options for a shorter cable i could purchase for my 598s? Id like to walk around base with em, but all that cable is kind of awkward to shove into my pockets

i suggest using a cable winder of some sort, i do not know of any replacement cables for these at the moment

My combo laptop->Fiio E10(DAC) -> C421 OPA2227(amp)-> HD598. Somehow I find this combo is dark. I think C421 OPA2227 is dark, warm and this leads to a new problem. Look like there is a dark atmosphere or background in my ears prevents me to enjoy the music naturally so I guess I do not like dark but I like a little warm and neutral sound. Do you think when I buy an ODAC, the situation will be improved? Thanks.

Yes. Here it is. My amplifier is JDSLabs C421 OPA2227.

I tuned up from 220Hz to 880Hz and 3.5Hz to 5Hz a little bit to make the midrange sounds fuller, bigger, more impact, better presence because I found out most of my songs with vocalists were fairly forward. Before I paired C421 with Fiio E10 and HD 598, I had not felt that dark black background.

Moon Audio does cables for the 598, but the cables are not detachable and will cost you a pretty penny.

Am confused how that combo could make the Senn 598s dark. What are you comparing the sound to? It's possible you've been listening to overly bright headphones. Try listening to the headphones out of just the laptop alone and then comparing the sound to your setup for a few songs you're intimately familiar with.

How exactly did you tune your EQ? Try flat-lining everything and see if you get the same results. I do Desktop -> C421 AD8620 -> ODAC -> Senn 598 and the sound I get is fantastic.

I had used Fiio E10 (through the amplifier of Fiio E10) + HD598 in 4 months and i just bought C421 OPA2227 last week so my feeling is truth. Somehow before I bought C421, I could feel the songs from vocalists clear but now when C421 in the combo it becomes clean but not clear. Look like there is a strange thing that holds on the voice of vocalists. Please do not get me wrong, I can hear the words better, instrument separations better, soundstage better too.

I tuned my EQ with the information that I have read from headfonia at this article. http://www.headfonia.com/eq-to-the-rescue/4/
My EQ was the result from these two EQs.

Thanks for reading my problem.

Both the E10 and the OPA2227 equipped C421 are the cause of the excessive warmth in your HD598.  The E10 tends to roll-off the top sound frequency a bit which helps give it that smooth sound many talk about.  The OPA2227 itself is a darker, warmer sounding op-amp with a slight lower midrange to mid-bass emphasis.  Combine those with an already warm sounding can in the HD598 and you get that loss in resolution and detail.  Though, the OPA2227 makes for a good pairing with bright and neutral sounding cans.

I believe originally the C421 was designed to be used primarily with the much more neutral sounding AD8620, but due to Mike's(Headfonia) lukewarm impression of it(he seems to prefer darker sounding gear) John began to offer the OPA2227(which Mike much prefers) as an additional option for the C421.  I think the AD8620 equipped C421 or another neutral amp would make for a better pairing with your HD598.  Maybe John can exchange your C421 with the AD8620 one?

The HD598 really needs an amp to tighten up the bass, and improve PRaT. It sounds fine without it, but the amp helps compensate for the "flaws" - if you can even call it that.

I just ordered the FiiO E17. Anyone ever use it with the HD598?

Thanks, Digital-Pride. Maybe I am going to order ODAC+O2 in one unit and use it as a desktop solution, and using C421 as a portable solution for my phone. Thanks again!

You're welcome!  Glad I could help.  I think the Objective combo would be excellent with the HD598.

So today I changed to use the headphone out of Fiio to C421. Wow, the midrange was significantly fuller, less forward than using the line out of Fiio E10 and the big surprise was I did not feel the background that hold the tonal down. However when using headphone out the bass and the treble lack too much detail, clarity, the sounstage was also smaller. To sum up, I certainly sure that the problem is Fiio E10 DAC function.

So now I have two options. When I want better mid quality I can use the headphone out of Fiio E10 but when I want to hear more details, bass impact, better treble and soundstage then I have to use the line out. Lol.

I think the Odac would be the perfect upgrade to your E10.
