but about grey backgrounds and flatness, could anyone expand on that + ...

In regards to comments of the Yggy having a "grey" background, chalk that up to
real 21 bit resolution. There is just more low level info to hear -if your gear is up to reproducing it...
That is well said and what I believe is going on...
I have found this issue of a "grey" background at times decieving...
As I notice THREE occurances happening in yggy that I have observed which can alude to this:
1- lack of background blackeness at times due to yggy replicating the source background "micro plankton" ambient info that fills this space.
2- It has been said that the choice of discrete components in yggy buffer stage,
may introduce a type of "mosfet mist", if your system is resolving enough to notice.
3-In comparison with other dacs.
There is a "fake" blackness presented by them,
because they are not as resolving as yggy of low level detail.
So a more forward dynamic presentation may be noticed in their blacker background.
The dacs that I have personally herd recently (Master7, Lampi5&7, LIO) all vary in their own soundstage presentation,
because they do not all decifer low level detailing at same level, or same way.
These details that the yggy portrays, which makes it obviously more realistic,
also comes across at times, less forward with less contrast as a result.
So in comparison, some may percieve the yggy sound hits a "wall" in background, or not as dynamic (grey background).
Yet all the other dacs sounded closer, and none were as wide as the yggy.
The attributes of those other dacs, contribute to making the instruments pop out more in a blackness of (missing) empty space,
wich in turn is percieved as a lively & dynamic sound...
Untill you hear the missing information, realisticly portrayed when listening thru the yggy.
It is more of an "air" or soundstage area "presence" type of difference, so you are more aware of where the event took place.
Also, to keep in perspective, the performance of the other dacs were at a high level.
So it "can" still become a matter of preference..
A choice of signature, or sonic attributes(in others),
Over "absolute" resolution(in yggy)..
Both paths are musical, just one is more real.
This is what all the nit-picking about the "greyness" is all about.
Personally, I think it is more important to realize where the yggy stands...
In another league.
