Schiit Valhalla Tube Rolling thread.

If I can find a WE for less than I paid for my amp, I'm in. Haven't heard that Raytheon mentioned before:thinking:. Since we're talking that family, I have a Tesla something-or-other (they have weird naming) that doesn't completely half suck.
Prob(WE396A < VALI.2) = 0️⃣. 🤣

2C51s will require an adapter. I love the WE396As with my VH2, but gotta say that I do like the Tung-sol smoked glass 2C51s a tad better. ;)

Are you guys talking about 5670 and WE 396A for the Valhalla or the Vali 2++?

I'm talking VH2. I assumed it's for VH2 given the thread, but...

Have you tried Bendix 2C51 ?

Of all the 2C51 - this is one of the few I've not yet heard - but read on here folks seem to enjoy
I have not. Hopefully it's not at a crazy price like the Bendix graphite plate 6080s.

Not quite crazy... but definitely borderline. Unless you can offset the cost with bbq.

I thought the "holy grille" Bendix 2C51 was milspec with three micas. I've been seeing a lot of the two mica versions on eBay recently (usually branded as eclipse-pioneer). Anyone been able to compare the two?

I could use some help.

I purchased a Valhalla II in 2018.
Always thought it sounded a bit muddy and missing clarity.
About two years ago I ordered a complete set of tubes on ebay (that shipped direct from the Ukraine), and the new tubes definitely don't sound muddy and have more clarity than the stock tubes.
However the new tubes are very forward sounding to the point that it is a little fatiguing to listen to.
I experimented using the stock tubes in the front (pre's), and the new tubes in the back (output), and it really sounds great! It's got the extra clarity, but is also not fatiguing.

So, I'm looking for another pair of pre-amp tubes (for the front) since the ones I have are a number of years old.
If I can find the stock tubes for cheap, I'd be happy to buy another pair. (Not sure if Schiit has always shipped the amp with the same tubes?)
I'd also be happy with something else that is better than the stock tube, but with a similar sound (since I think it sounds really good atm).

Any recommendations would be great!!

There are a few options for sure... I've been enjoying 12AT7s with an adapter. That's 'cause I have a power amp that uses those.. but yeah I love the Mullards CV4024 and RFT ECC81.
Especially the RFT because they are not expensive :)

Thanks for the response!

Not sure I want to use an adapter atm, but if I did,
  • Where can I get adapters from?
  • I assume the gain is a bit different than the 6N1P, so how does this effect the volume and dynamics of the amp?
  • What differences do you hear vs the stock tubes?
Thanks!

You can definitely check older posts... there's LOTS of info regarding rolling ! :) But yeah, I got my adapters from https://pulsetubestore.com/ great service! highly recommended! :)

From "my" perspective, it opened up a bit the soundstage. But I'll be honest. it's subtle. My equipment (or a combo with my ears), it won't resolve THAT well for me to be like a HUGE day to night difference.

From the aesthetics tho, I really like the brief "flash" when I turn on the amp. :)

…as long as that flash stays brief…😳
