I'm fortunate enough to have hoarded purchased 4 pairs (2x early 50s sideways labeling and 2x later horizontal labeling) of the WE 396As and 2 pair of the JW military variant a few years ago before the prices went totally nuts.

The 396As are spectacular! If you have the need, opportunity, and funds - BUY THEM!

I have a matched pair of D-getters from this seller from a couple years ago that felt expensive at the time but now can't find more anywhere at less that 175 per single. Reasonably priced seller though..

I had some but I gave them to friends, I no longer have a need for some specific tubes, I am working to simplify and enjoy what I have. I got a Vali 2 out today just to check the size for mini shelves and somewhere I probably have tubes for it but my friends and I will be doing other comparisons soon so I need to work on those.

And I was content with my late 50s WE 396As... happy even... and then you mention the sideways (Cowen-approved) printed WE 396A... and I impulsively bought a '51 edition just now.

I envy your ability to start the journey!!! I got to a point where I needed to design amps specifically to my needs and hear every tube money could buy to arrive at a sound that blows my hair back, or what little is left of it.
