Well, I'm almost certain I know the difference between chicken shyte and chicken salad. Since I've actually put my money where my ears are, I'd like to think I've experienced a bit about what's going on with respect to this topic. I'd politely suggest, if you haven't already... experience / live with / try owning an amp(s) that have very little / no negative feedback. I currently own 3 of them. One is an OTL tube amp - Joule Electra VZN 80. Another is an Ayre VX-5 Twenty (solid state). The third is one you've probably never heard of, heard, or will ever even see in person... Joule Electra VAMP Integrated - Hybrid tube input stage / mosfet output.
Notwithstanding any of that... let's step back and take "ME" out of the discussion. Hey, remember that time when Mike Moffat talked about "no negative feedback" in Stereophile 30+ years ago?
Or, let's try this one... maybe we can just actually do a little homework from Theta (Uhh, Mike?) from "back in the day". I wonder, does Mike think no negative feedback is worth pursuing, or "Sounds Like Azz"? Perhaps his views evolved, I dunno.
And then there is this from the late Charlie Hansen of Ayre:
But whatever with any of those guys... how about John Curl?:
And then... there's the question people should be asking a lot more about right here, and one I've been trying to find more info about. NOTE: I don't own any headphones / amps, and am not likely to anytime soon / ever-ish; however, I at least have enough interest to try to learn. So, I went and read thru the Midgard stuff regarding HALO...
If this talk and good natured poking at @Jason Stoddard is too much to bear and interrupts the M&A / Cat conversations... I'm most certainly sorry not sorry. For those who haven't dug into what I'm talking about / experiencing... and are wondering why I'm hitched up to that bandwagon... I hope it helps.
The question you and others should be asking yourself, but "don't understand" is: Why is Schiit / @Jason Stoddard announcing / launching / talking about this? Maybe it has nothing to do / applicability to speakers. I don't know. If you have interest, then you can do the rest of your own homework. As for me, I've heard the difference... and have tasted what I like. When you've never tasted it, you don't have a frame of reference.
How about a topic with no controversy: the obviously best headphone cables!
I nominate almost any cable except cheap Chinese cables and those made for Hifiman.... oh, same thing.
On the other hand I'm using a set of not cheap Chinese cables now that sound pretty good. They're from Apos. I had a set of Cardas that sounded the best I've heard. Connection is now bad and in need of repair.
Which sound best to you? Or do they all sound the same? YMMV
@Jason Stoddard -- a non-audio request. Please recommend 3x Texas red wines (or blends) that the wife and I should try. We are fond of Merlots and Cabs, but open to any types that are not too dry or sweet. Looking forward to your recommendations.
So Comcast is rolling out drastically improved upload speeds - but still well short of symmetric fibre.
Many USA markets are dominated by the 1 wire to the house: coax for Comcast or DSL upgraded to fibre, depending who was there during initial development.
I signed up for 1.2 from Comcast in the last couple of months and was greeted with 1.3 up and 250 down. Upload speed matters, especially if you VPN back home when presented with open wifi out in the wild.
Fortunately my FiOS at 500Mbps up/down is sufficient for me. Although I would love 1Gbps, it's just the wife and I so that seems like more than enough. And miraculously whenever my contract is up and I call, I get more speed for less $, so why not!
