On the topic of Saga and possibly weird decisions, I have a thought: balanced output, but no balanced input. So that it can run Schiit monoblocks and long interconnects. On the input side, the need for balanced is much less. Makes sense to me, but might confuse other people.

I also agree that three inputs is easily enough. If I run out of inputs, it's on the DAC these days, not on the pre.

Anyone stacking a Loki Max and an Urd? Thinking about getting the LMax but my space is limited. It’d have to either be on top of a HiFi Rose streamer or stacked above or below my Urd. Any input appreciated.

My Urd has lived on top of my Loki Max since I got it. No issues here.

If one has a Saga, and needs balanced outputs, Lokius inserted after Saga can take care of that problem nicely.

True, and I personally have a Lokius but not a Saga. This idea is in the context of making Saga a more enticing proposition.

I myself still wouldn't buy it, because 1 dB steps on the volume control is too coarse for me. But I'm fairly sure this is not a normal criticism.

For me personally, I want 0.625 dB steps in the volume control, balanced out, Lokius placed before preamp so I can use it both with headphones and with speakers, and switchable outputs also for headphones / speakers. So I'm eyeing the Kara for sure. Kinda would prefer to have the headphone amp separate from the pre though.

Also, my wallet is not agreeing to anything at the moment, and this will take months to resolve.

I had that happen on a piece of silver gear before I went over the Dark Side. Windex and elbow grease worked. I should have noted earlier : I do have spacers between the Loki Max and Urd. Nothing fancy, just something to get a little extra breathing room between them.

Here's a very different preamp-adjacent idea: a blind listening facilitator device. Single input to three outputs and three inputs to single output, automatic relay stepped attenuator level matching.

Either or both of 1-to-3 and 3-to-1 can be used. Click a button and the three alternatives are randomly mapped to A, B and C. Listen blindly for a while or for months, this device should not reset when powering off. Then click the button again and learn which was mapped to which.

Bonus points for a 1-to-3 stage that is USB for comparing DACs, and a 3-to-1 stage through which you can run headphones for comparing headphone amps. Maybe an accessory box for switching speaker level signals, comparing speaker amps or speakers.

Crazy? Maybe. Sacred cow BBQ? Yes. Uses lots of Schiit expertise with relays and microprocessors? Check. Have at it, Jason, you know you should.

(No, I won't sue you for taking my idea, I don't really think I can after posting it here, in public, and saying this: free to take. I might not be able to afford the product, which would be a pity, but don't worry about that.)

Jason has said, and the Loki Max manual states, that the Loki Max should not be stacked on other gear, nor should anything be stacked on it, because of the inductors. These coils can pick up noice from transformers in other gear.

On the Schiit website, it's "Do as I say, not as I do" for both Loki Max and Tyr.
