Modular for sure, plenty of small boards.

Looking at the PCB, it seems pretty small, compared to the other R2R's out there. Must be the SMD parts doing work O.o.

There is nothing in the pictures to give you perspective, this DAC is ginormous.

Wow, 25 lbs.  The price per pound is really not all that high compared to other similar products.

I'm thinking the Gen 3 USB board could immediately be swapped into Gungnir and Bifrost, could they not?

What's the matter, your wallet getting overexcited?

Don't expect a Gen 3 USB upgrade for Gungnir or Bifrost anytime soon.

You might be comparing it to some R2R DACs that are constructed with discrete components. The Yggdrasil uses a DAC that is indeed an R2R design built on an IC, along with a unique and custom digital filter implemented on a DSP chip. No worries about the perceived size of the circuit board, the Yggdrasil certainly has the leading edge technology that should enable it to compete with the best out there. I'm anxiously looking forward to and expecting more rave reviews as the Yggdrasil gets out and into the hands of more listeners.

Jason, can you describe the difference between the USB Gen 2 and Gen 3 input board?

It's not all that exciting technically, I'm afraid. One uses the C-Media CM6631A receiver (Gen 2) and one uses the CM6632 receiver (Gen 3). Beyond that, there are changes to the firmware, different drivers, and changes to the layout to accommodate the differences in the chips.

Beyond that, I'm afraid it's a Mike question.

Actually that explains it nicely, thank you.  I can look up the specs on the chips to see the differences.  I appreciate your time.

So my wife says don't you think you ought to get rid of some of those DACs you have lying around before you buy a new one?  I responded that sounded like something my ex-wife would say.  Looking shocked she replied "you never told me you had been married before."  I responded "I haven't been."

Seriously, it would be a tough sell as much as I'd like to have one just to celebrate the road Mike, Jason and the whole Schitty company have taken.  Yggdrasil is a significant accomplishment, not just another ho-hum more of the same product.
