Given the price differential between Altmann Attraction DAC (~6000 euros, but even more if you get additional options) and Modi 2 (max 150$), this is a sorry indictment for the Altmann device... The Altmann DAC doesn't even have a case (let alone a fancy one) to justify anything that comes close to the headline ask price.

Is this a joke? People pay 6000 euros for this?

That's just laughable...

"the complete electronic assembly of the Attraction DAC is vibrationally optimized, as the pcb is flat-press-mounted on a specially treated spruce-board. This construction is time-consuming during manufacture, but improves sound quality, as all components are mechanically coupled to a musical sound board."

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

At risk of pissing people off and this is purely on that picture, I have never heard this dac. But it looks like the trip to radio shack also resulted with a pit stop at the Home depot.

I would never use that thing because of those cheap toggle switches.  I mean COME ON...

And AutoZone, check out that fuse.

The Toggle switches look fine to me. As I said I never heard this unit and never said I will not use it, It may sound fantastic but Mounted on a piece of Spruce, REALLY?  For a science project sure. If there is indeed some evidence that this method of mounting does indeed result in sound improvement as they claim, OK. I accept. At 6,000 euro for a base unit, cost savings is clearly not a factor. Throw a dog a bone build an spruce enclosure, at this price point whats another 49 euro for a few more pieces of wood?

I'm surprised its not a fancy European fuse.

IMHO to truely experience the R-2R goodness you need to upgrade your reference music. This will probably land me right in the snob category, but I can hardly stand to listen to that album anymore [1999 Remaster]. Fun & catchy music? Yes. A good reference for this level of gear? Definitely not.

Hahaha I got an email notification of your post before you edited it. Other than being really rude, you're also wrong.

I'm not the middle aged balding audiophile whose been using Aja to test their system for decades. I'm 27 and happen to like Steely Dan along with a ton of other genres, punk, indie whatever. I could have very well used Grateful Dead's American Beauty HDTracks release for my test...or Pink Floyd....or Daft Punk...I digress.

BTW, I was listening to the Japanese SHM-CD of Aja, flat transfer with huge dynamic range, no crushed dynamics like the 1999 remaster.

I swear, people on the internet....

What affordable speakers pair well with the Schiit MB line?

Magnepans ($600) have the best price/performance ratio.  They have an in-house trial if you are serious.  But they need an amp that can provide a lot of current.

I have a soft spot for Wharfedales (300ish, I think) and the new Elacs are supposed to be great at $259.

So ... comparing the Sabres in my PrePro to my Uberfrost via speakers.... (in a not very scientific or rigorous way).

The Sabres have more precise imaging and a crispness to them that at first is very attractive.  After a little while I lose interest in the music, sadly.

The Uberfrost's images are a bit fuzzier around the edges and there seems to be a little bit of a veil or noise, relative to the pre-pro (this could be a balanced vs SE thing).  The bass is richer, however, and I don't lose interest so quickly.  So, in a way, the Uberfrost is more satisfying.

In these specific dimensions (imaging, noise floor, bass) how does the Bimby compare to the Uber?  (What I really want is a Gumby but apparently Santa didn't think I was nice enough).

Thanks in advance for all the helpful comments.

You'll find more of the crispness in the Gumby - even more in the Yggy

For that kind of money (6k euros for a DAC on a stick)  I'd get a bunch of Yggy's and do what @TubemanRQ did with the active digital crossovers and stuff.

2 Yggys, and a Minidsp nanoDigi and I'ld still have enough left over to get a Gumby for the office.

I have not owned the Modi 2, just the Fulla (same DS chip), but others here have described the difference as very substantial. It was a huge leap going from Fulla to Bimby.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm assuming he meant powered speakers since he's asking how they work with a headphone amp?

If so, I use mine currently with a pair of JBL LSR305s on the desktop and it works quite well.
