Your finding seems to indicate that 240GB mSATA SSD with adapter draws more peak current than 240GB HDD. That is interesting. Maybe poor adapter design contributes to power waste. Please let us know when you have a better adapter board. 
 
Do you think 1TB mSATA SSD need more peak current than iPod (and adapter) can deliver? And can 5.5 Gen's small RAM handle 1TB of LAME v0 VBR mp3?  
 
I heard one may reduce SSD's power draw (while retaining NAND memory) by removing some controllers/components (e.g., those that are overkill for/not utilized by iPod). Please kindly comment. Thank you!

 
Based on some further reading (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-840-evo-msata-review,3716-9.html), I think 1TB mSATA SSD may not work well in an iPod. I found that, in the case of Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD, the 1TB version needs significantly more power that <= 500GB versions, while the 500 GB version does not need much more than 240GB. So 500GB mSATA SSD may be a safer bet

Rockbox uses LBA48 mode for large hdds, so I don't think there will be limitation on drive size. The only limitation is power, i think a double battery mod is necessary, or at least use the thick case version, ie. 80gb backplate, so a larger capacity battery can be installed.

I can't find any tech specs for the 840-evo drive, that's why I love Micron. 
Whatever how power hungry the drive is, it can be made to work, just add a separate step down DC-DC convert to supply 3.3V for the mSATA HDD, assuming the battery can be moded to supply the needed current. 
Right now we are already stressing the TEA1012 DC-DC converter & battery at a discharge rate approximating 1C during disk activities.

So I have this new "bad boy" hobby.  Hooking up my various itoys to a new Fiio E07 Andes.  So far I have the ipad with the 30 pin connector and the iphone 5 with the lightning connector working.
 
Tried out my old 5.5 ipod video and received an error message related to voltage.  If I recall, this older unit had the 12V firewire charger.
 
How is everybody addressing this issue to have conversations with their DAC units?

Arranged from left to right, in the order of good to bad:

• Model 616-0230. Li-on, This blue battery is the best in terms of capacity and reliability, OEM, manufactured by SANYO.
• Model 616-0229, Li-on, can be identified by the yellow kapton tape insulation. OEM.
• Model 616-0392, Li-on, 2.04whr, all black wrapping, OEM, a little thinner than the above two, so a little less capacity?
• Model 616-0412, Li-polymer, OEM, marking: 2.04whr, 550whr, capacity is OK however tends to swell when over discharged. May have poor protection circuit implemented, some battery getting really warm during charge, could be hazardous as the battery in iPOD nano 1st, Gen. I am surprised that Apple didn't recall this.
• Model 616-0227, Li-polymer, OEM, seems to be the same battery as above with different model numbers.
• For 616-0230, Li-polymer, non-OEM, bought from Ebay, marked as 650mAh but definitely over rated, poor performance even when new.

Conclusion: Li-on battery is more reliable than li-polymer battery, choose li-on battery if you can, avoid non-OEM batteries that is over rated in capacity.

I tried the Blue battery Model 616-0230 and the Black Battery Model 616-0392  the blue one stops working after the charge goes down to 30% and the Black one when it goes down to 53%.
 
I went back and put back the iPod 7th gen battery.

I need help, after 1 1/2 years of trouble free Rockbox use on my 5.5G (30g) I now am unable to reboot my iPod and not able to reboot Rockbox. . I have tried everything I know to get Rockbox to update on my Mac. +5R's and tried the iPod patch off Rockbox.  The iPod loads onto iTunes and works in iPod mode but Rockbox utility keeps saying it does not recognize the mount?

Have you tried to restore your iPod with iTunes and do a clean install of Rockbox?
