anyone compare the D100 with AudioGD NFB-12? Or if anyone can tell me if upgrading to the D100 will be a significant change over the
NFB-12.

The D100 will be more linear and transparent than the warmer slightly colored NFB-12.  I think will be a sizable upgrade.  Its sound is a bit more on the analytical side, so recording quality might factor in a bit.

anyone have experience with Tube DACs in comparison with D100 around the same price range. The one I'm looking at right now is the Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-11

Are the balanced XLR outputs line level? or can they be volume controlled (essentially, could you use this as a balanced HP amp)

Essentially, it sounds like this is a step up neutrality and sq wise from the Matrix mini-i (albeit more expensive)... but I'm wondering if it can function as a poor man's Audio GD NFB-10SE.

Line-level, from what I remember. Haven't actually tested my D100's XLR outputs, since I have nothing that uses XLR... but I remember reading somewhere that the XLR and RCA outputs are line-level and aren't volume-controlled.

Thanks Griffinhart - that's too bad... makes this a tougher call. Now I'm stuck with is the NFB 10-SE $150 better (or do I want SS balanced that much) ?

They are line level. You can't use the D100 as a balanced amp so you would need a separate amp for that.

Well, price was too good to pass up - looks like I'll be joining your ranks soon.

D100 has arrived. Wow. Quite a noticeable upgrade from my EF2a. I'll be curious to compare just the dacs through the little tube amp as well, but first impressions - the D100 doesn't suffer poor recordings as well. It lets you know exactly how bad it is.

And that, of course, is a good thing - because when you do feed it something nice, it really shines.

Can't wait to really sit in for some heavy listening.

When I use S/PDIF the display is showing 48KHZ, however it was 96KHZ when I used USB. Is it because S/PDIF is limited to 48K? In terms of quality should I go back to USB? I am using a lenovo laptop.

Yulong's S/PDIF and coax inputs support up to 192KHz. Have you set your operating system or media player to output at something other than 48KHz?

Sounds like a driver settings issue. Check your drivers for your soundcard.
