Review: Spiral Ear SE 5-way Reference - A new level of resolution? (Review posted 5/15/12)

Dehumidifer phobia running wild on Head Fi. I like in a humid city and 3 years with no issues.

Um I don't entirely agree with this. In Hawaii we also have some high humidity and it does impact my SE5s sound signature with prolonged usage without putting it the hearing aid dryer. I notice the sound starts to smooth out. Detail starts to get lost.

thats life not always 100 percent will agree. I had no issues but that can be because I am not focusing on the issues.

That is true. Of course I do focus on these things as its a part of the whole experience. Otherwise I would not have spent all this money on it :). I aim to maximize performance and doing something as simple as drying the SE5s weekly (sometimes less than that lol) will help to ensure their optimal operation and prevent issues due to humidity or sweat build up in the tubes. These units do not have the filters like most other CIEMs.

I'm-not-sure-I-want-to-upgrade question of the day: What EQ do you need to apply to SE5 Ref to make it sound like Ultimate?

I'm-not-sure-I-want-to-upgrade question of the day: What EQ do you need to apply to SE5 Ref to make it sound like Ultimate?

250-1000 Hz + 2db
2500-4000 Hz -4db
6000-9000 Hz + 3db
That's about it~

Maybe overall 12000-19000 Hz  -1db for more smoothness.

i don't know why , but all this time i thought that spiral ears was a Korean company (probably confused them with New Tears ?
rolleyes.gif
) and this kept me off from thinking about buying (being in Europe , fear of taxes etc)

anyway , seeing they are in Poland , i am now much more interested in trying out their CIEMs

SE5 Ult seems like the one i would enjoy best (NT-6 is also the other one i am currently eyeing)

one question , what is the difference between reshelling and ownership trasnfer , if i buy a used one that is say 3 years old ?

or does the ownership transfer apply only for those still relatively new (and inside the warranty period) ?

thanx for any feedback

If I am not wrong, when you get a second hand Spiral Ear, you need both to make it reshelled and get an ownership transfer. Only reshell is for existing owners. And warranty isn't transferable. So when you get second hand, you have to pay for both basic reshell and ownership transfer.

A friendly reminder: u need to pay both reshell fees and owner transfer fees at the same time if u buy a used SE5 from my friend's experience..
