I prefer my SE846's on medium gain.
can you elaborate on why ? I have been questioning whether I am better off at 41+ on volume on low gain or going to medium at a lower volume

I always keep the sound at a reasonable volume. My hearing is too precious to me.
I've been using QP1R with SE846 as well.
And even at low gain and volume level of 20, hissing sound is noticeable on standby mode.
Albeit, when the music starts the hiss is almost gone.
Is it only my device?

QP1R on high gain with Audio Technica is an excellent pairing.
I received one of the newer units with the improved click wheel and it seems fine. several recordings have a little hiss, but I've determined it's in the actual recording, because really, really super well recorded albums like Michael Jackson or Dire Straits have zero hiss
