Still slippery, but seems accurate. I lick my finger and wipe on my jeans before each use and it functions perfectly, until the next lick.

It is normal. Probably more obvious with sensitive iems. But heard from others v2 has lower noise floor, so not that apparent or gone.

I received one of the newer units with the improved click wheel and it seems fine. several recordings have a little hiss, but I've determined it's in the actual recording, because really, really super well recorded albums like Michael Jackson or Dire Straits have zero hiss

People who are more sensitive to hiss will hear it with the QP1R and SE846.  Is it not a problem with your device or your IEMs.

Well I hardly hear a hiss when the music is playing. But only during standby/plugged with no music played.
I can live with it though, just wondering how it does on y'all units :)

Smooth, not notchy. Surface is a bit smooth. I lick my fingers and wipe it on my jeans and it works perfectly

I don't understand why it should matter what the gain setting is for IEMs if you can adjust the output SPL with the volume control? If you set high gain just lower the volume range, low gain you use a higher volume setting for same SPL. Isn't the hiss heard when not playing music the same with high gain and low volume versus low gain setting and higher volume setting?? I wonder if the gain setting should have any effect on sound signature at equivalent volume settings that give the same SPL.

you make a choke - QPR1 is on the high level of AK380 high-tier
Sony ZX2 is a coloured mid-tier

I love the questyle qp1r and it isn't even broken in yet.

In my opinion, not even the AK380 -- the QP1R sounded more detailed and coherent to my ears than the AK380.  The AK380 Copper has been the only DAP that has comparable sound quality to my ears out of all of the DAPs I've listened and compared.

The Questyle QP1R blows the AK240SS out of the water.  I sent the AK back!  You would have to pry the QP1R from my cold, dead hands.
