Yes it matches really well.  It really came to life with the hdp.  It gives it the power and the accented highs of the hdp makes the akg k271 sparkle.  It almost sounds like an open can.

Is the HDP the or one of the best dac for $450?  I like the dac, but honestly, my headphones are too on the bright side for the hdp amp.


Can I get a better dac for the price range?  Or is it worth keeping just for the dac?

 


I do think it's worth keeping just for the DAC, and it's very competitive with other DACs in this price range that I've heard. But I know there are a lot of DACs out there that I haven't heard yet, and my experience in this price range needs to be expanded.

Thank you.  I think I'll keep it as a dac and who knows, use the headphone when and if I get a pair of darker headphones.

I think the M^3 will work nicely with the RS1i, the midrange is almost tube like smooth and lush presentation. I've bought a RS1i now, looking forward to receive it so I can compare against my RS1. Did you sell your RS1 before you got your HDP?

I think you have the RS1 which has a little more thicker midrange.  
I used to have the older button RS1 and I think it would have been ok with the HDP, but now I have the RS1i, which as a thinner midrange and more treble energy. 
 
Yes, it's all about synergy.
I have an old vintage receiver, and while not as clean, it has so much power, that the soundstage is really wide and bass incredible.  It gives a really nice thick midrange.  With the RS1i, you need an amp that thickens the midrange.
Honestly, I think the UDac-2 had better synergy with my Grado than the hdp.

I sold the buttoned semi vintage rs1 months before I got the hdp. I currently have the rs1i.  I think it's a better headphone, if you have a warmer amp.

I'm sure this was mentioned before but I see the Linear power supply listed under Optional Accessories.  What are the benefits to the HDP?  And is it available?

It's not out yet, no ETA according to this. Nobody really knows the sound benefits of a linear psu on the HDP yet

Do you have experience with AKG K 272 HD  and the HDP ?

great synergy.  it is great for monitoring because the hdp accentuates the highs and therefore details in the akg k271/2.
