If it is wired wrongly on one side, then I'll assume what you get is likely a lemon and you should get it replaced.

I don't think so, but I do get the idea that the volume from the right unit (which has the mic in the cable) is slightly louder than the left. Which tends to move the soundstage slightly to the right.. Especially when listening to some of these mono sound samples: http://soundjax.com/beep-3.html
