Review and discussions - Audioengine D1 24/96 USB and Optical DAC/amp for laptops and computers

I own a D1 and I've got an O2+ODAC on its way... I'm just a beginner here and I'm trying experiment a bit, so I'll soon be able to test them side to side.

Don't expect a technical report though... I'm just not capable of that. I'll just be able to report if I hear any audible difference or not

P.S. at the moment I only own a pair of Sennheiser HD598, I got the O2+ODAC thinking about trying some higher impedance stuff in the future.

Definitely looking forwards to your comparison. I'm having a O2+ODAC and have considered the D1 for purchase many time. I'm very interested in the DAC section of the D1, could you plug the O2 into the D1 RCA output to see how it performs in comparison with the ODAC.

I will definitely do that! I've read in a few places that the D1 has a very good DAC and a weak amp section.

I'll get playing as soon as I'll get my new toy

It might take a while beacuse I'd like to give the O2 some break-in time, the D1 did definitely improve after a few days of use. Stay tuned and I'll let you know my take on this.

Oh, and in absolute terms I'm very happy with the D1, build quality is top notch, super easy to use and portable. I use it for my desktop speakers as well and the difference from the line out of the PC is striking. And of course it's very very pleasant with my HD598s

Good afternoon!!

Lots of great info within these forums!! I'm trying to determine why I would want to step up from the D1 to the Emotiva Stealth DC-1? Mostly from a sound perspective. I get that the Stealth has way more connections. For me I'm trying to determine if it's just extra connections alone or if there is added sound benefits as well. I'll be using the DAC primarily to connect to the Airmotiv 5S speakers. Thanks for your input!

Hi guys, I've been owning a D1 for about 5 months (secondhand, but receipt shows it was bought in June last year). While listening to music or watch movies, the audio device suddenly has a slight beep and no sound comes out. I have to restart the device and it's ok... until it comes up again the next few hours; just an hour ago I had to restart it twice to get audio.

Is this a hardware problem or something to do with driver conflicts, or even a problem with Windows 10? I use a Lenovo Flex 2 laptop as my source.

Ok, so here I am.

Both an O2+ODAC and the Audioengine D1 are on my desktop now.... I'm using a pair of Sennheiser HD598

The O2+ODAC came in 1.0X - 3.3X gain config, and I'm using it at 1X gain, if I push the gain switch the HD598s get too loud too soon and I basically don't even get to use 25% of the volume before reaching uncomfortable levels.

I'm listening to Chavez Ravine, the album by Ry Cooder.

It's the first time I attempt to compare audio components side by side, so any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Basically I've got both devices plugged in, and I'm switching between one and the other trying to work out the differences.

By saying this I've already given out the fact that they sound pretty similar to my ears.

I've tried to match the volumes and... I guess I'd have trouble being able to tell which one I'm listening to if it wasn't me switching the wires.

I honestly wonder if the differences I hear are real or just what I'm convincing myself of being able to recognize them.

Anyway, the D1 seems to sound kinda more laid back and relaxing, I'm not sure how to explain it but I feel like the drum strokes are clearer on the O2+ODAC, the voice more in my face and the bass more thumpy, but the sound of the D1 has some kind of overall signature that seems more pleasant.

I can't really tell which one I prefer, again they sound too close for me to be able to tell.

I'll switch to a completely different kind of music now, just to see if differences become more apparent....

Metallica, Battery (from Master of Puppets)

Here I feel differences seem apparent! The slow guitar intro sounds very similar on both units... but when things get mad and congested the O2+ODAC seem to stay on track more easily. I can tell the instruments apart from each other more easily and the enseble seems more dynamic and less compressed to me.

Again, it's not a massive difference but the O2+ODAC seems to come out stronger on a track like this, where on the more "airy" music I listend to first I seemed to prefer the D1's sound.

Now on to something different again: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Downtown

Again here the two seem to come very close...

There's a very deep and isolated bass note in the intro that seems to extend lower and be more engaging on the O2+ODAC. Also, drums seem to sound more controlled and precise, but at the same time I like to vocals best on the D1. I found myself lowering the volume a bit on the O2+ODAC because I found them to get too much in my face :-P

As a bottom line... I think I really can't tell which one I like best, I guess I'll need to spend more time with them both to be able to tell!

As first impression I feel like the D1 is overall more "pleasant" to listen to, but also not as resolving and fun as the O2+ODAC, which I also found maybe a bit too aggressive when compared to the D1.

Again... I believe I might have exaggerated the slight differences I believe I've heard, in order to be able to describe them at least!

I'll keep playing with these two little boxes, I've got myself the O2+ODAC because I plan on getting an extra pair of cans that might require a stronger amp then the USB-powered D1, but if I had to stick to the HD598s I would say that the convenience of the D1 being 100% portable and not needing an external power source to run would be enough for it to be the winner. Honestly this makes more of a difference to me then the slight differences in sound signatures I've heard so far. Also the design and finish on the D1 is superior and more refined in my opinion.

@lehoang15tuoi sorry! I've got the O2+ODAC "digital version" only, so the only input is USB on this one and I can't test the amp alone using the D1's DAC section...

Thanks for the very nice review! The past reviews I read only offer very similar conclusions, but it's always better when a head-fier put down their actual experiences in words.

Actually if your O2+ODAC is similar to the one above, the 3.5 input on the right (next to the gain button) can function as either DAC output for the ODAC or amp input for the O2. So if you have a 3.5-RCA cable you can connect the D1 to the O2.

Perhaps I'll wait for the chance to buy a D1 for my speaker system, which I use mostly for softer music.

That's very likely to be due to a USB port with unreliable power supply. Experiment with different ports or try an hub with external power supply.

I just plugged the DAC into a USB hub, and picked up an cheap external power adapter for the hub. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it sounds like the extra power acted like an amplifier because the bass sounds fuller, there are a tad more details picked up, and the soundstage widened slightly. Here's hoping it doesn't short-circuit again... I left the computer for a couple hours, had to reset the dac again. Doesn't sound like a power issue...

Actually mine does not have the input at the front, so I can't test the amp section alone using the D1 as DAC... too bad

Hi Everyone,

Just purchased a d1 and audioengine a5+ , I currently use both a macbook pro and a windows system.

I've been running them continuously about 20 hrs.

I am about to regret my decision.

Here are the problems I encounter:

- Everytime I put in a headphone and remove it, d1 turns down.
- After I turn it on, windows stars acting weird. Playback devicec options hang, any application that uses audio just freezes including spotify. Unplugging it and pluggin it into another port seems like a fix, playback devices settings turn back to normal, even play the test sound. But any application that uses audio still doesn'T open or freezes. Force quitting them doesn't solve the issue as well.
- even If I open youbute, chrome bar gets frozen.
- below happens (or some of it) if I turn off d1 and open it again.

My problems with a5+

- Something is seriously wrong. after 50% volume, all the bass is distorted. I can't turn the volume on on this thing. I've tried it with iphone, macbook and windows. all the same.

I can't believe this is quite buggy.

ps: I'm running insider preview of windows. I'm a developer myself and quite know my systemç
ps: also there is a creative titanium hd in the system as well.
ps: there is also onboard sound card as well. but I'm not using any of them and my problems are spesific to audioengine d1

any thoughts?

Thankx

You might have tried this already but... have you tested different USB ports with your D1?

I've noticed that the D1 is rather picky when it comes to the quality of the power supply of the USB port it is plugged into. Mine would work consistently only on one of the back and one of the front ports of my desktop PC, and only on one of the three ports on my laptop.

On not-so-good ports it would occasionally stop playing, sometimes it would not power on, I would hear it "clicking" like when you turn it on every now and then.

I'm thinking about getting one of these. So the headphone output is 2 vrms? And the output impedance is 2 ohms? The audioengine site says 2 ohms, but people are also saying 10 ohms. I'm intrigued by the digital pot as well, I'm curious to see what type of range it has.

Have had one for a few years now and recently I have had a problem in so much as I cannot get the USB to work out of any of my USB 2 computer ports. My computer doesn't recognise it. I have tried all the solutions suggested in various forums and by Audioengine but none have worked. I have had to use an optical cable and power it from the mains.

Hey Guys,

Here has been an update on the issue,

driver problems fixed.

but the problem with heavy bass hadn't been. I've used the system with an iphone, mac, pc and even with another DaC.

I live in turkey but bought the itrem from amazon uk. Audioengine asked me to take it to the distributor, which was quite far away.  They told me that its completely normal? That this device should be turned on 50% of the volume.

My problem isn't actuially the volume. The bass is super heavy that even when I watch movies, I need to turn on the subtitles to understand what people are saying to each other. Bass is too heavy and audioengine doesn't think my device has a problem.

I use a hifiman he400i instead now. I have these huge and expensive speakers that I can't enjoy.

sp: don't buy audioengine.
