Do these require a Receiver?

The Dayton Audio speaker and sub-woofer set do not need a receiver to work with a computer.
On-board audio or a sound card can work with the Dayton Audio 2.1.

I'd like to use it for movies and music.  All of them are in a single area, with my computer and ps3 (for blu ray movies).  My room is fairly small so I don't think I need a REALLY good setup.  My soundcard is a Xonar Essence STX and my onboard is the Realtek® ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC on my sabertooth z77.

So just run RCAs from the Essence STX RCA outputs to the RCA inputs on the back of the sub-woofer.

Are these ~sale~ prices, or if I waited I could find it for cheaper?  I don't mind waiting since I'm happy with my headphones, though I'd like some oomph for movies and music during the day.

Because I was wondering if these would be better for the price

These are about the same price total, wondering if anyone compared this with the ones you suggested. and Also with the Klipsch 2.1 you have PurpleAngel.

Edit: I think I will go with the Pioneer as I have been reading many reviews saying there is nothing that can really beat these for 50 dollars.  Though if I grab these, what receiver do you recommend to go with these (as cheap as possible)?  Preferably 5.1 as I might pick up another pair in the future.  Also would it be bad to mix the Dayton Audio Subs with these or should I stick with the Pioneer one I linked above.  Kind of interested in the difference between 8" and 12" subwoofer as the 12" Dayton is $99.

I actually saw those come up a couple times but I haven't read much about them. What do you think about them?

The KEF iq30 are one of the best bookshelf speakers I ever heard. Period.

1) Small size, huge sound, lot of details, excellent soundstage, very very powerfull, easy to drive.

2) Huge bass : you don't need to have a subwoofer.

3) Excellent results with every style of music. Voices are impressive with the iq30.

Trust me, it is really unbelievable.

Yeah, for those prices, go for the pioneer bookshelves. The 12" Dayton will no doubt go lower and louder than the pioneer sub, but you'll have to dial in the sub's eq to fit your room. I love it when newegg randomly halves prices, it's how I picked up several headphones.

Not arguing with any of that, and I can point the OP to even more glowing reviews of those KEF bookshelves, but he seems to be looking for cheap ....

Even pre-loved, you would be looking at over 600 clams - and I would love to hear them side-by-side with the Q300, even if the latter is slightly less sensitive (87dB vs 899dB)

The other and probably most tempting option is I'm thinking of getting a onkyo 5.1 sound system ht s3400 refurbished for 200

Well, your other choice could easily double that 200$, so it sounds like your budget is pretty much making your choice for you. Might as well get the onkyo refurb and enjoy it, you could always upgrade those speakers later.

Receiver should be fine

Awesome. Would the hook-up be as follows: Laptop>USB DAC> analog out> Receiver Aux in>woofer and speakers?

Vanns had the Black Ash for $400 so maybe I'll get lucky?:D But yeah, there is a pair on Amazon for $600. I'm thinking of getting the Energy RC-10 which from what I read are good for their price. Having trouble finding any audio shop so I can listen to them before buying though :frowning2:
Also would it be easy to pair them with a sub?

If you keen on the RC-10s hit AVS forums and they could advise you on sources to nab em on the cheap
