 Hi everybody!

This is my first post.
I've been around this site for quite some time (as "guest") but finally decided to join in
L3000.gif

(don't know where to introduce myself but I do think I'll do it anyway)

Since my sister is going to visit me in November (she lives in Wales, UK) I'd like to ask her a new headphones.
What I want?

- Closed Type
- Really comfortable for long and long periods
- Strong bass response without being boomy
- Smooth sound. No harshness at all
- Long cable or with extension (in total, min 3 mts)

My budget is up to  £200. I currently own Denon AHD1100. I really love these headphones, but they're somewhat uncomfortable for longer periods.

So, calling all headphones expert
Thanks!

200 pounds equals about 320 US dollars.
What are these new headphones going to be plugged into?
Also for me personally, strong bass and long term listening do not go together.
Audio Technica ATH-A900s would be great for long term listening, but not really "bassy" headphones.
Denon AH-D2000 have good reviews.
Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250-Ohms are my favorite headphones, but needs an decent headphone amplifier.
You can usually get the DT-770 Pro 250-Ohms for $170 US, which leaves another $150 for a headphone amplifier.
You can get a low cost solid state headphone amplifier off eBay (ships from China), for around $100

Thanks!

What are the sonic differences between the 80 ohm and the 250 ohm version?

I have a powerful stereo receiver (Yamaha RX 797)
Should I need a headphones amp?

Denon AH-D2000 would be a natural upgrade.

Comfy - Check
Excellent bass response - Check
Smooth sound - Check (Slightly recessed mids though, but can be EQ'd real easy)
Long cable - Check (Exactly 3m)

Low impedence (25ohm) so an amp isn't really needed.

The 80-Ohm is the bassy headphone, the 250-Ohm is more balanced.
My Onkyo TX-SR706B works fine with my 250-Ohm headphones, so I'm guessing the Yamaha RX-797 will also work with 250-Ohm headphones.
A tube headphone amplifier would add more warm and soul over a solid state amplifier.
I do have 2 single tube headphone amplifiers, but I find it just easier to plug straight into the Onkyo.

Heya,

Denon D2000 is the next step. Or save up more and go D5000.

Or, you branch off into complimentary headphones, like Ultrasone PRO 750, SRH940's (less bass, but has incredible bass extension), possibly even XB500 or XB700 (but cables are short, would need extensions). Then there's the DT770 premium and pro, I suggest premium for less clamp (more comfort). Or save up more, and look at the T70.

Yo Fang, when is HifiMAN going to produce closed back dynamic/ortho into the line up!??!?!

Very best,

SRH940(with ZO), Pro900(used), JVC HA-MX10.

Keep suggesting!

Those 300 quid Denon AHD2000 are too expensive for me now

I've been recommended Audio Technica ATH M50 (yes, I'm on Stevehoffman forum
wink_face.gif
) but I don't know if these would be an upgrade (or more likely, a sidegrade)
Any  opinions?

I got the D2000's used from ebay for about £120, worked out about £165 after import duty.

£219 from advancedmp3players.co.uk  with free delivery - http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/Headphones.6/Denon.320/AH-D2000/Denon_AH-D2000_Closed_Type_Stereo_Headphones.3321.html

No need to pay £300 through amazon.

I liked SRH840 almost as much as D5000 and I got them for 1/3 the price.  By far the best deal for good closed headphones imo.

Any more recommendations?

I'm really curious about brands like Sennheiser. Any worth-having closed-back model?

I know virtually every brand have their own signature sound. I'd like to read from you comparisions and more reviews

I've been reading a lot around here

Please give me more recommendations

I really wanted to hear ATH M50, but after noticing the "white box" version posted on this forum I felt somewhat "mmmmm...."
bright highs? less bass than the "black box"?

Anway, keep suggesting! there must be something really good, warm-sounding and comfortable waiting for me
