I recently found out about and like A Tribe Called Quest, especially the tracks "I left my wallet in el segundo", "Can I kick it?" and "Buggin". They're from the 90s, and they've got some jazz influences in their songs as well.

Awww... (Sorry to be glib.)

Since the very first reply to the OP's question left the topic, I feel like it's OK to stray a bit? Some of the newer stuff that's been exciting is (ignoring the big stuff like The Throne/Drake/Rick Ross) this Oakland group/collective called Main Attrakionz and their constellation of side members. You can find their stuff here http://greenovamusic.bandcamp.com/

Along the same lines, from the south there's an overlapping contingent of socially conscious rappers: Big K.R.I.T. (who's releasing his next album exclusively (at first?) on Bandcamp, which is pretty interesting), G-Side, Yelawolf, and my personal favorite, Kristmas.

Then there's the blog hype kids (which would probably include all the above, honestly): Lil B (I'm Gay is pretty solid), Soulja Boy (his last few releases have been, IMHO, pretty awesome), ASAP Rocky (the new savior of ny rap...), Das Racist (who I freaking love and were actually on the cover of SPIN last month), and jeez.

That's just the stuff off the top of my head. You should also check out Clams Casino's productions — he's worked with ASAP, Soulja Boy, Lil B. He's really trailblazing, yet is just a young guy living with his mom's attic in Jersey. His productions (and Main Attrakionz/ASAP Rocky's) are becoming paradigmatic. Check out these two songs

Yeah how did you somehow put Lilb and soulja boy in a list of good rappers. From what I've heard I'm gay wasn't good, just better than the brain dead stuff he usually puts out. and soulja boy...

Well to each his own, I really like the phonte album right now, charity starts at home. gonna check out that new drake as well just to see how it is.

LOVE Tribe.  I was fortunate enough to see them live last year.  Then I heard they broke up (again).  Seriously one of the best hip hop groups ever who could've made more music but just couldn't put their egos in check.

Personal favorite:

Track 12 on Midnight Marauders:  The Chase, part ii

The songs were mentioned were great.  But how about:

Bonita Applebaum - A song about Q-Tips love for big booty women.  But it's more sweet rather than the, "Let me get on that" attitude.

Electric Relaxation - One of the best jazz influenced songs released by them.

Sucka N#g@a - Love this song.  Telling the world that the use of that N word in NY is something the Youth took back from everyone and have used it in endearing terms (while also in the process infuriating the baptist church for wanting to abolish it.

Award Tour, Scenario

That's about all you need to realize their a top 5 Rapper group.

Have to say the new drake album is alright. Considering the type of music you get from him, this actually a pretty solid release. Kind of gets labored towards the end but a solid outing. I don't even remember listening to his first album but this is definitely worth some plays.

good rappers is subjective. plus they are popular with internet music hipsters (pitchfork and theneedledrop) so people are going to recommend them now that they are accepted by more people.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been any mention of Insight.  This guy has a mind on him.

From what you heard about the album, or of the album? I'm Gay is all right. I actually wrote somethign about it (http://fuse.tv/music/columns/listen-closely/7511-1.html). But the song I linked to is not on that album. Lil B's kind of annoying, and he releases a lot of music that's hard to sift through for the good stuff. It's probably not worth doing.
