Common - The dreamer, The believer
The game -  The Documentary
GZA - Liquid Swords

These groups/artists don't really utilize real instruments, but they utilize beautiful, jazzy samples in their songs and excellent and creative lyricism. I listed the group/artist and the recommended albums in parentheses.

Common's second album Resurrection, with the greatest hip hop song ever IMO "I Used to Love H.E.R."
De La Soul (Buhloone Mind State, Stakes is High)
A Tribe Called Quest (The Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders)
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth (Mecca & the Soul Brother, The Main Ingredient)
The Pharcyde (Bizarre Ride II: The Pharcyde)

Any thing with a cult following will be overrated by the obsessed fans. While i also think they rely on shock and gimmicks i still see most members being miles a head creative wise over a lot of rappers.

Blu & Exile make beautiful music.

Indeed, too bad Blu seems to be obsessed with releasing horrible (sound quality wise) sounding music since that Jesus thingy of his. Odd Future might be overrated by some, but are still one of the more interesting groups out there imo.
