Sorry to revive old thread, but i just joined akg only recently.
I agree with the above post, i sheldom listening to musics anymore. k501 sounds really good for movies, tonally very realistic, seductive mids, LLLAAARRGE soundstage.

Now i am looking for used made in Austria akg k702, also for movies.

I do not have any other AKG HPs other than K 702. I owned them for 3 or 4 years and Meh!! just did not like them as much as my HD600s. One day I found at this forum that they need at least 300 hours of break in to sound decent. I hooked them up to my computer and played music on Jango for 300 hours. Bingo!! they sounded as good or better than the HD 600s. I next bought a Wywires Red headphone cable for them and the K702 is now a keeper.

Something which makes the AKG 7-- headphones hard to rate, is the
fact that the manufacturer(s) keep changing their sound.

A few years ago, I had an Austrian made K702.  The soundstage
was huge and I enjoyed that.  They needed a bit more bass, though
IMO.  Sold them for a bit of a premium when the Chinese version
hit the market.

Had the Q701 two separate times, and it just did not grab me.
IMO it didn't do anything particularly well; it was just another
good headphone.

Then, curiosity got the better of me and I bought the Chinese K702's.
Wow!  I thought they were very good.  A rich, full sound, smooth...
audible bass, well balanced.  The huge soundstage was no longer
present, but with the new pricing they were an excellent value.
And the build quality seemed on par with the Austrian version
I'd had.

But I did sell them...you know this hobby.

And today?

I saw the K701's at an incredibly low price on Amazon, and bit.

The first thing that knocked me out was the bass!
These were always knocked for their light bass - since
their release.

But now they have real, honest to goodness bass.
(I'm using a Gustard H10 amp, BTW.)
The soundstage is large; not immense.
Treble is pretty good overall, though there
seems to be some roughness in the upper midrange/lower trreble.
Anyway, they are far better than I anticipated based on what I'd read -
and more importantly based on my experience with the K702's and
Q701's (2X).

As far as I'm concerned, it's become a fool's errand to compare these
headphones except in the present - and even then,  care is warranted.

Well, i think all of the open AKG's can sound smooth and transparent from the low to the high registers, if they are fed with neutral low output impedance amp.
They definitely need good damping in the higher registers if you want nice transparent sound, this also produces a little more laid back listening experience because they don't shout into your ears.

I'm not a fan of the company in general. Their headphones tend to sound too bright and bass-light, imo. There are certainly exceptions in the budget range, but I bet those (Y50 etc.) aren't made by AKG themselves. K701 is the perfect example (of a worst case scenario): a serious lack of low-end + some pretty high db trebles - a tiring listen.

Beyerdynamic isn't known for much more neutral sound-signatures, but at least they have comfort done very well. Those nubs on the K701's headband, I still get headaches thinking about them. Worst comfort I've experienced ever.

EDIT: Before you ask, K271, K240 and K550 fit the bill too.

It's cruel, folk.
I'll never do the ranking, although I prefer K240M to K702.
K702 and latter models give you more details of treble.
Technically, I think K340 will be at the first place.
