R5, a new Android DAP by Hiby

Thanks for the tip. I created a guest network but still only get two bars. I would really like them to update the music player because I can't get Hibylink to work on the R5s with any device - my old R3 Pro worked really well. The Shanling Music app with Synclink connects every time!

It was worth a try. As you probably know, 2.4GHz wi-fi has a significantly longer range than 5GHz, especially through walls and such. And it's plenty fast enough for even high resolution music. Are you still getting disconnects/buffering? The number of bars may not tell the whole story.

I have no problem encountered when I sent my unit back to them for replacement. Although the waiting time sucks due to the pandemic, and you have to pay for the shipping fees as well...
Yeah I am gonna send it to them on the next week. I even bought another R5 (non S) and I will probably resell it, or sell the S one when it comes back from the RMA. If the non S breaks too I will never buy any Hiby stuff again =D.

Yes. It disconnects and buffers all the time. I invariably have to reselect the the wifi - which takes forever! It always happens when I'm streaming.

So my battery on the R5 seems to drain very quickly (like drains 70%-80% in a day) on Standby. I kind of remember it lasted a long time in standby (like a week or so) when I first used it. Could there be maybe some app or setting causing it to drain? I have Bluetooth turned off and only have Tidal, Roon, Qobuz, Apple Music, Hiby, Chrome and UAPP as the main apps.

Google play services permissions need to be all turned on.

Thanks. That was probably it. How does having a few switched off affect the battery?
Google location services trying to access its privileges and being denied, trying again and again keeping the device awake.

the other thing that might work, that others have tried, is to disable Google Find My Device.

It's an ongoing issue with update servers. For now you can download and install this update apk manually:

Please take care to restart the R5 after the update, before attempting to use the updated version.
I've paired my Hiby R5s with my Xiaomi mi5 and the R5s shows up in Hibylink. But when I click on the R5s in hiby link I get the message : "unknown device connection failed". I've reset the wifi/bluetooth on the R5s and cleared data in Hiby Music on the R5s. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?

Have you set the R5s as the HiByMusic Server and the Xiaomi mi5 as the Client (correct) or the other way around?

Yes, R5 server, Xiaomi Mi5 as client. I can't get it to work at all on my Huawei M5 10.8 tablet. Both are paired OK and I can see the R5 on the client page but it simply won't connect. Hibylink on my Huawei M5 10.8 and my old R3 Pro worked perfectly every time. I was expecting the R5s to do the same!

Here is my brief comparison between Shanling m3x and Hiby r5:

3.5mm output (single dac): the m3x delivers a brighter sound with upper mids emphasis. Bass has good extension and is very clean, mids tend to sound thin and overall is an unbalanced sound that i don't recommend with bright/treble focus iems like final A4000 or Sonorous 2.

On the other hand, hiby r5 sounds completely different to m3x: It has a warm sound with mid-bass emphasis and treble roll off. It sounds less aggressive than m3x, mids have better resolution and more body. R5 is one step above M3x thanks to a more natural sound, same level of detail in highs without being aggressive and fuller mids.

3.5mm output (using M3X´s dual dac): A big step forward in terms of sound, it loses its aggressiveness in treble and gains a balanced soft sound with excellent mids texture and good layered treble. Bass remains the same as in the single dac mode and M3x now presents a better sound representation than r5 especially in treble.

4.4mm output: This is where both daps shine! I highly recommend using the 4.4mm output to experience the best sonic performances.

Shanling m3x: it gains little warmth and presents a very balanced sound where all frequencies are rounded with softness. Bass has good speed and good sub bass presence. Mids are linear and instrumental separation is better than in r5. The treble still has more presence than in R5.

R5: it loses mid-bass emphasis and gains more realistic bass attacks and natural decay. It still has more bass weight than m3x. Mids remain warm and deliver a particular coloration to voices, it presents a wider and deeper soundstage than m3x and treble improves in almost all aspects compared to the 3.5mm output.

Gear used: Final a4000, sonorous 2, hifi boy osv3, ame j1ux
