R5, a new Android DAP by Hiby

Any recommendations for getting more out of the sound of a R5 Sabre? I've been A/B testing mine against a first-gen A&K KANN and the KANN just kills it (same IEMs - CA Andromedas - same cable, 2.5mm balanced on KANN, 4.4mm balanced via Moon Audio converter on R5). Which is a shame, because the KANN doesn't support any streaming anymore, and that's something I wanted out of a DAP.

the CA Andromeda is very output impedance dependent. What is the actual difference you hear between the R5 sabre and the Kann? Depending on the answer, an impedance adapter may be your answer.

The new firmware update is good. Coupled with the latest revision of Amazon Music HD the unit finally has decent response to user commands. Not snappy but acceptable. For example, I can pick a playlist in Amazon HD and get a response in less than one minute. It used to be up to 3-5 minutes. Nice job.

When transferring FLAC/MP3 files via USB transfer file mode, sometimes, it's getting stuck then a Windows error-sound will occur on my PC but there's no error message at all. It is just stuck until I click "cancel". Does anyone also encounter this issue? I also noticed that when this happens, some tracks on my R5 tend to skip few seconds. Not sure if this is just because of my sd card. I did try to format it before and it is still the same. Is it better to transfer files via SD card reader instead? My worry is if will it ruin the playlist that I created if I remove the SD card from R5? Sorry for bad english.

Hi. Is it possible to install/flash google play on a R5s China unit?
This is the answer regarding Google Play on any HiBy R units (Chinese version):

Statement regarding the google framework on HiBy Music Android-based devices
Owing to Google having exited the Chinese market, google-related applications are non-functional or worse, impedes function of Android devices in China. Hence they need to be removed from Android devices intended for use in China. Whereas they are of course necessary outside of the Chinese market. Different versions of firmware had to be developed for the two markets, which were not user-interchangeable. Hence, it was deemed beneficial to the company and vendors, to provide the two versions of the device at different prices (lower for the Chinese version), reflecting both their different capabilities and the fact that they were not interchangeable.
Recently, it has come to our notice that various vendors are supplying Chinese version devices to international customers, and supplying software purporting to convert Chinese version devices to International version devices. Such software require users to totally erase and rewrite the firmware contained in the players, in hazardous operations previously reserved for factory service and prone to bricking the device.
As such software supplied to the public both introduce possibility of bricking and undermine the pricing structure put forth in good faith to Chinese and international vendors of the device (giving unfair advantage to Chinese vendors), we at HiBy Music will not condone, much less support the supply of such software, least of all supply them ourselves.
Chinese version devices were sold to Chinese vendors with the understanding that they would only be good for use in China. If a vendor misrepresented the capabilities of the HiBy devices they sold and sold them to unwitting international customers, or failed to disclose the version of device they have in hand in situations where confusion is obviously possible with bad results, they have the responsibility to bear return shipping of the device and refund the purchase in full. Users should report any vendor refusing to do the same to us, providing their devices’ serial number and/or proof of purchase, so that we may pursue the matter with the vendor. And the goal should not be requesting that we provide the dangerous factory reflash software detailed above.
List of vendors of International version devices:
1. International distributors https://store.hiby.com/pages/cooperative-partners
2. International stores run by HiBy:
https://store.hiby.com/
https://hiby.aliexpress.com/store/4663118

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?me=A1T7ZU7TZD5TV4
https://www.amazon.de/s?me=A1T7ZU7TZD5TV4
Vendors not found in the above list can be assumed to be selling Chinese version devices unless explicitly stated otherwise by the vendor. If a customer hears such a claim from the vendor and receives a Chinese version device, again, the vendor has full responsibility to bear return shipping of the device and to refund the purchase in full.
Thanks in advance to all customers for your patience and understanding, and all vendor partners for your cooperation.

Best regards,
HiBy Music

If you turn off the player before removing the card, you should be able to use it in a card reader and put it back into the player without breaking anything.

Perhaps there's an issue with the USB cable you're using?

They say that the next OTA will fix this

For my R5 (non-saber) loading a convolution IRS file now causes settings to force close. I have tried several.

Oh dear.

You did say IRS file? Do you mean this with an .irs extension or .wav extension? Or both?
