When i got them out of the box the right driver didn't work. 10 min later it did, and I listened for like 6 hours and liked what I heard. Annnd the right driver seems to be out for good. Yay

The stories keep piling on.... buy a good used pr six months old might be the safest way to go.

Does this happen often?

There seems to be a lot of stories re: issues with them. Percentages vs other cans in the same price range? I read all about HFM having big problems and I haven't seen one yet....

The real world is full of compromise, laziness, and imperfection.

Oh yeah it is. It's cool that in this hobby in particular people do get very creative, which oftentimes leads to nice results. Nothing worng with that

I had mine (got from Massdrop) losing the left channel after 2 months. Sometimes it comes back after some tapping but totally lost it at last. Got a replacement from Quad and works perfectly fine.

Quality issue aside, it's a great headphone to have.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to Drop Community Support. I am sorry to hear that you are having that trouble with your Quad ERA-1. While I understand how frustrating this can be, I would like to provide you with some information regarding our return policy.

We only offer returns for items that arrive damaged, defective, not-as-advertised, or are missing components. These issues must be reported within 30 days of receiving the item. Looking at this product run page, I see that a warranty was not included for this product.

When runs are completed, we submit the group's order to the vendor up-front. This is how we are able to deliver the best value to our customers and is why all sales are final.

You can find this information about our return policy, along with additional information within our Help Center, here: https://helpdesk.massdrop.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019107874

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding of this policy. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

Best Regards,
Camilla

Isn't there some sort of statutory warranty or liability for defective goods separate from the warranty provided by the seller?

Correct, check the items spec page, if it doesn't state any warranty info, you only receive a 30 day warranty ! I do not understand the concept of saving MAYBE 15% to 20%, waiting months to receive the item, then only getting a 30 day warranty. Yes, I have bought products from massdrop. However, I always check the spec page for warranty info. I refuse to buy a $500 amp with only 30 days of protection.

I believe Europe has laws the protects the consumer. It is not so easy in the US when it comes to these types of situations.

Thats beautiful sarcasm, considering you are contacting them about a "concern".

After reading about a number if you having intermittent sound problems, I wonder if it is simply bad solder connections on the input connector or the connection to the driver? I'm also pretty sure that the ones Massdrop sold were an early production run known to have intermittent problems. But I have also seen units purchased from Amazon having the intermittent sound problem. It could also be the input connector on the earcup losing the connection from the cable plug if the connector has relaxed or is poor quality.

That being said, if anyone in the USA is 'stuck' with a defective ERA-1, I would be glad to try to repair it if it is a connection problem. I couldn't help if the problem is the driver itself unless a new one is purchased from Quad. I have opened and modified a number of phones including planars so I do have some idea what I am doing. I just hate to see fellow Head-Fiers out a somewhat large sum of money due to no support. If anyone is interested, you can check my history and feedback here on Head-Fi to see I am legit. PM me for further details or questions.

Forgot one thing. If you are using a credit card for payment on Massdrop you should check your terms and conditions as you may have warranty through your bank. Many banks give you a 1yr warranty on electronic purchases.

New owner of Quad ERA-1 here. First of all, it's really a very good headphone IMHO. I've had HD800, T1, HEX and a few others, and overall I think the ERA-1 feels as high quality as the other ones and is probably better if one wants a single headphone for all genres (but not necessarily better at specific things, such as size of sound stage like the HD800).

I have a problem with the cable, though. Sound cuts out on the right side every now and then, when moving my head or touching the cable. At first I thought it was the headphone (the sound would sort of wobble every now and then). I then tried another cable and the problem was completely gone. Switching back to the original cable I can now reproduce it 100 % by simply tapping on the right-side connector near the headphone. If I do that, the signal cuts out. It never happens with the other cable, and never on the left side. I don't know if this is a common problem (will contact the reseller of course). I would never have suspected the cable myself, and it was really a coincidence that I found what the issue was in my case. I'm just glad it's not the headphone, which is really very good.

It's worth a shot.

I felt like the vibrating diaphragm was stuck and then it failed to output any music. Some hard taps on the outer shell or tuning up with volume helped putting it back to business...
