(Proposed) Darkvoice 337 Dedicated Tube-rolling Thread

I will say I use a pair of WWII era Sylvania VT-116A's in another amp and they're wonderful tubes. Mine quieted down after about 10 minutes. Keep letting yours burn a bit and if they don't chill out after 10 hours or so you might have a bum pair. Be sure to clean the pins as well.

Bum pair likely. Pins are clean. Two nights of burning while I sleep didn't chase the hum away. Will keep the pair for other amps perhaps.

Received a pair of Brown-based RCA Jan CRC-6SJ7 -Y from a buddy. Will try that out.

Ouch. My first pair of tubes over Ebay. Or perhaps VT-116A is incompatible with DV337. Will get the Jan Philiips in this case. Thx for the insights.

Yeah i definitely recommend the Philips JAN and the Tung sol mesh plates.

djork, how is K1000 driven by DV337? DV up to it?

Tested RCA Jan CRC-6SJ7 -Y brown-based. More clarity than the usual RCA black metallic tube, at the expense of warmth.

Found HD650 and K701 to give two different sound type. Each time I use any one of them, I thought: how could the other ever be better? Love them both on DV337!

After accidentally breaking one of the stock preamp tubes, I just bought two 6SJ7GT mesh-plates from radio electric, inserted them into my darkvoice and... This really low, constant rumbling noise appeared. How can I make it go away? Does it go away with prolonged use? I'm using the stock power tubes. Thanks for the help.

Have you run-in the tubes for 24 hours or so?

No I've not, I just popped it in out-of-the-box. I didn't realise new tubes would give off noise; first time I've ever bought new tubes. I'll try a run-in when I get home later. I'll be purchasing two 5998 tubes tomorrow, by your recommendation. Heh. Thanks much Skylab

They do need some time to quiet down. My 6SJ7GT mesh-plates became quiet after I burn it for a day. (I didn't even plug the 6AS7Gs while I was burning it.)

Yep - those tubes will require a good 24-48 hours to become totally silent. But eventually they will.

I am thinking of getting a pair of 6J8P(6SJ7) to EF80 converters for my DV337, but I couldn't find much info here regarding the tube rolling of EF80s.

DV337SE users, can you please post some of your tube rolling experience here?

In general, compare with the 6SJ7, are EF80 tubes sound more on the warm and lush side or on the more dynamic, detail side?

Same question as frank99. Also, where does one acquire said converters? I've done some VERY light searching for EF80 tubes and they appear to be dirt cheap. Might be fun for some more experimenting.

I got some EF80 adapters made so I could use them in the normal 337 in place of the 6SJ7GT, but I did not find them better sounding. In fact, I prefer the mesh-plate Tung-Sol 6SJ7GT over the Amperex mesh-plate EF80. The T-S was lusher, if a little mellower.

But I only tried the Amperex, and I only compared to the T-S, which are the best of the 6SJ7GT. So some folks might find differently than I did.

I already have Philips 6SJ7WGT's for my DV 337, would a switch to the T-S be worth it? If so where can I find these tubes? And one last quick question. My current favorites, the RCA 6AS7G's seem to be dying on me. I had them tested not to long ago and they tested almost new. However, one tube, no matter which channel I put it in, developes a serious bass hum. Its very loud, but quites down if I let the tube warm up for an hour or so. Tapping it lightly seems to bring back the hum to some degree, if not all the way. Five months of having these tubes and this is the first time I've ever had this issue. Is it going bad on me?

RE: the RCA, yes, probably going bad. Time to replace it - RCA 6AS7G's are cheap.

I personally think the mesh Tung Sol 6SJ7GT are noticeably better than the Philips. However, they are very hard to find. It's not like you can just order a pair somewhere - you have to watch EBay and get lucky.
