For me it's all about creativity. The gear is only a tool. The photographer's eye and imagination are the most important components. It's taking something that we see everyday (and often don't even bother to notice) and capturing it in such a way as to make it interesting to the viewer. I'm not the most creative person but it gives me a goal to shoot for.
I have had that run of gear head buying compulsions, but really I think I enjoy how photographs extract life from the time domain. Our world is always moving so fast that a shutter click has a magic of capturing just a slice to contemplate on.
